Wiper travel
« on: 23 October 2014, 18:28:42 »

I've read the guide for setting the wiper parking but the problem I have is that when the wipers are in use the drivers wiper rides to far over to the right (hits the windscreen A pillar trim) and the passenger wiper just clips the bonnet edge on return. When they are parked they park in the right place.

Are there any other adjustments I can make? I've gone through the process of repositioning the arms but can't improve the above situation.

"Sounds" like the drivers side is set too high in the park position. Pas side does tap the wing it seems, no matter what you do. I often wonder about fitting a shorter bad on tha pas side.

Why have you started posting in a Yorkshire accent Chris?

Mine do this but I simply re-adjust them when needed. Readjustment usually needs doing every couple of months even when I do the 13mm nuts up FT + 90 degrees. But it's only a 30 second job so not bothered  :y

Oh and you'll probably find the paints come off where your pass. one has smacked the car..... touch that up  :y

Unfortunately re-adjusting the wiper arms doesn't seem to be the solution to me, in order to resolve this I'd have to put the drivers arm down in the scuttle area and the passenger one higher than horizontal so they will no doubt hit each other from bitter experience.

I wonder if setting the park position lower and moving the arms higher would resolve the issue? So that the drivers arm full travel doesn't reach the A pillar. The only thing I wonder about then is if both wipers are going to end up somewhere in the engine bay when on fast wipe.

Eee lad....If the travel is too far then that implies the radius on the arm on the motor is too long. Has it been bent at any point? Possibly in winter through frost or snow restricting the wipers movement?

Both mine, the passenger side is above horizontal. In fact, I think that's the case on all Omegas I've had.

Or, there is wear in the con rod nylon ball joints. Or the nylon ball joints are loose in the metal arms. These cin rods can be replaced individually. If you move the wiper arm by hand how much play is there?

There's a little play in the mechanism, in that, if you wiggle one arm the other moves as well.

I think the larger body profile of the flat blades doesn't help with the passenger arm tapping the bonnet - a normal blade would go under the bonnet edge lip.

Thing is both cars exhibit the same fault, maybe a legacy of rain sensitive wipers being left in auto mode since the car was built!

Or the nut on the motor arm is loose? My drivers wiper arm is horizontal and misses the A pillar. So sumats not right somewhere.

The stock wipers tap the wing as well. Trust me. Or mine did. As do a couple of other members cars I've been in. The stock wipers can't follow the profile of the screen in that corner either.

Just to add, the slightest play, or the slightest increase in the effective length of the radius on the motor arm gives a huge differance in the total travel of the wiper arms. Millimetres equals inches, type of equassion.

And I forgot to add, mine don't catch anything.

It's now worth removing the motor and mechanism, and checking the condition of all the joints. If both wipers are unsatisfactory, then you'll probably find the actuating arm on the motor spindle is loose and/or worn.
