replacement parts
« on: 28 October 2014, 18:56:54 »

Some things are better GM, other stuff ,aftermarket will do.

Couldnt bring myself to spend £26+vat on a track rod end, but quite happy to go middle of the road.

Local gsf clowns done my box in so have gone with these.

Been fitting these bits for a while and seem quite good so far, keeping the paperwork for to see if they last the warranty period.

nice exploded diagrams available with part numbers too.

I've had a bit of trouble with the shite that Autovaux peddle as "genuine" (but no hologram on the packaging) and lemforder TREs.  Given that the majority of the cost is in the alignment, I do now use genuine parts from dealer for TRE.

I know what you mean Jamie, but to be honest, most pattern parts you fit will proberbly out live the car, i have the same issue with drop links, dealer price retail £40, or £27 plus dreaded trade, going down the pattern route with these as the price is negliable.
you should be ok with patern TRE.

Some years back on the ABS, bloke fitted a 2nd hand OE TRE and a new pattern to his Monza/Senator (I forget which) and 12 months down the line the 2nd OE was OK, while the pattern was fubar'd  :-\

There is a definite consideration towards value for money...

If a pattern tre lasts half as long as a genuine one yet costs a quarter of the price, then why buy the genuine one?

Depends whether you're changing it yourself or paying someone else to do it  ;)

There are some parts which on all cars are not lasting as long as they use to,these all seem to be suspension and steering components, which the trade have been putting down to people taking speed bumps to fast and the general disrepair of the highways,so it has become harder to say weather genuine or pattern is best..

On a car which the manufacturer hasn't made for over 10 years, I would say that on most jobs pattern parts are the way to go.
Of course with the Omega, its been proven that some items are better with the VX hologram on but those items will become few and far between over the next few years as any original VX stock gets used up.
Once that happens, IF Vauxhall do stock a item, you will probably find its just a shite quality item bought of the shelf somewhere and badged up with the hologram  :(

Joys of being a old car enthusiast I suppose  :(

Griff, I'm a firm believer that all cars nowdays are designed by accounts who couldn't give a toss what happens to the car after the manufactures warranty has run out

Because the majority of the cost is in the alignment anyway. Hence, given that a pattern TRE seems to struggle to outlive its warranty, I personally found it to be false economy.  GM was around £25 (TC) for the part, pattern around £15. WIM was £60+VAT.

Hence in this specific instance, based on my own experiences, for the sake of a tenner, I'd now only fit genuine. I tried going down what I thought was the cheap route, only to find it more expensive and double the effort  :-[

No not at all when comparing the life of failed parts I personally see on members cars on my drive and on members cars that have handling issues that other garages have had a hand in. Some have had garages look at the fault several times. Only to fail to diagnose the parts THEY fitted cheap for the customer.
Well it's new right? So it must be some other component causing the issue. No it's the shire parts they fitted themselves.

Point is there is a very clear trend among cheaper parts to fail early. Obviously.

The "trade" isn't going to admit it's at fault no matter what happens. So sadly it's up to customers to decide. While I fully agree £235 a side for wishbones and £110 a side for ht leads is outrageous, generally speaking your far better off with genuine, if your looking at long term reliable use.

That's not to say that we don't need to explore the pattern market in search of better alternatives. James v6cdx's eternal exhausts being a prime example, as he introduced those to the forum and we're grateful to him for that.

But on the other hand, presuming anything "euroversally shite parts" sell as being cheapest and best is asking for trouble. But that works the other way as well. They do sell some decent replacements for those ht leads I mentioned earlier. ;)

What's competely retarded about the pattern parts debate is that we all KNOW cam cover gaskets need to be oe. Yet we still get idiots claiming, against years of experience and numerous members with more knowledge than they care to remember, that pattern gaskets work. They simply dont.

If individuals want to try them that's up to them, but don't start trolling on here that they are acceptable, as someone else will suffer the consequences if the pattern theory is allowed to take hold.

We ALL know what works and what doesn't amonst the regular members on here as far as I can see. Yet some members think they give bad advice going by posts here.

And as it goes on forum integrity goes down the shitter as a result.

I would Add though that we do need a cheaper replacement cam cover gasket that works. Something your lovely Dbug is looking into apparently. :y

I'm in need of front discs and pads, what would be the best option for me?

Trade club disc pad set for frint axle is about £110 least I looked. But to get best out of the. Buy some heat resistant paint and paint them the night before.

If you don't have trade club (link in FAQ) then all German do some good sets pre painted iirc.

The front axle disc pad set from Vauxhal is the safe bet. But people are looking for alternatives all the time. These take their full life to be proven though, so the jury is out in those.
Avoid the cheap shite like mintex for example.
