There are some parts which on all cars are not lasting as long as they use to,these all seem to be suspension and steering components, which the trade have been putting down to people taking speed bumps to fast and the general disrepair of the highways,so it has become harder to say weather genuine or pattern is best..
No not at all when comparing the life of failed parts I personally see on members cars on my drive and on members cars that have handling issues that other garages have had a hand in. Some have had garages look at the fault several times. Only to fail to diagnose the parts THEY fitted cheap for the customer.
Well it's new right? So it must be some other component causing the issue. No it's the shire parts they fitted themselves.
Point is there is a very clear trend among cheaper parts to fail early. Obviously.
The "trade" isn't going to admit it's at fault no matter what happens. So sadly it's up to customers to decide. While I fully agree £235 a side for wishbones and £110 a side for ht leads is outrageous, generally speaking your far better off with genuine, if your looking at long term reliable use.
That's not to say that we don't need to explore the pattern market in search of better alternatives. James v6cdx's eternal exhausts being a prime example, as he introduced those to the forum and we're grateful to him for that.
But on the other hand, presuming anything "euroversally shite parts" sell as being cheapest and best is asking for trouble. But that works the other way as well. They do sell some decent replacements for those ht leads I mentioned earlier.

What's competely retarded about the pattern parts debate is that we all KNOW cam cover gaskets need to be oe. Yet we still get idiots claiming, against years of experience and numerous members with more knowledge than they care to remember, that pattern gaskets work. They simply dont.
If individuals want to try them that's up to them, but don't start trolling on here that they are acceptable, as someone else will suffer the consequences if the pattern theory is allowed to take hold.
We ALL know what works and what doesn't amonst the regular members on here as far as I can see. Yet some members think they give bad advice going by posts here.
And as it goes on forum integrity goes down the shitter as a result.
I would Add though that we do need a cheaper replacement cam cover gasket that works. Something your lovely Dbug is looking into apparently.
