We always said we would have a dog when we moved to Spain ten years ago but never got round to it. A chocolate coloured lab would have been nice.
In March this year we encountered a pitiful creature that had been abandoned (no longer a puppy, cost too much to feed, needed excercise etc). Since then we have wormed him and got all his jabs up to date. Vet tells us he has a weak heart. Probably another reason he was abandoned.
He is about 22Kg, 18 months old now and is a cross between an Irish setter and something like a Podenco.

Doesn't bark much at all except a few gruffs to let us know a stranger is around. He doesn't lick you which is a plus. He is however strong willed. Loves free running so aledgedly keeps us fit with twice daily walks. Likes water but not swimming. Wasn't too hard to come up with the name Fluke although sometimes Fenton would have been more appropriate.

A couple of months ago, the dog identified his former owner when his BMW started up in town. Clearly there was affection there on both sides . I wanted to ask how could they abandon the dog you b$rsteward. I didn't.
We also have a cat. Black and white feet (Black cats are unlucky in Spain apparently!). She adopted us ten years ago. No good as a mouser, doesn't sit on your lap or like being picked up, has two crooked rear legs- probably broken as a kitten by kids swinging her around. We still love her to bits too.
We put them both in kennels/cattery for the first time last month and the cat fell ill. Vet wanted to put her down as she is riddled with cancer. We said no and although thin, she is now eating and living as before. At 10 and a half she is having a good innings for a semi feral origins cat. Like Vamps says , it is a big decision to end a pets life. Kennels/cattery and vets bills were nearly £500.
Ah the joys of being a pet owner.
