What is very annoying is;

If I had a half day available, I'd happily come across and get this sorted for you.

Unfortunately, time is not available at the moment.  :'(

Now making progress  - a few dns mx changes guided by Microsoft and we seem to be almost there. Will confirm next day or so as still not out of the woods for certain
So you're changing your mail server then?

I am told not - I have allegedly had my mail server "verified" that I own the domain - but  have had to set up new email accounts for which I select the Exchange option. So the server stays with media temple but Exchange are in some way - involved - so in the dns list with media temple I seem to have a couple of providers. I really do not understand the technicalities and have asked to comment on a couple of areas which are confusing - that is to say they say further dns changes maybe necessary if we use Lync and other products.

It would be good - and appreciate interest.

Last message from Microsoft:

"From the domain setup we created only the mandatory records for exchange online, to set it to complete status we can add all the DNS records from that page or opt for don’t check DNS for my domain.
About emails not showing up in outlook inbox, could be bandwidth issue, usually for a 2gb PST it should have been completed the sync in 4hours. Once the upload is complete 100% you will see new incoming emails without any delay."

If you have updated the MX record where does it now point?

Why not just move to Office 365?

Everything is working fine now - Microsoft technical have been absolutely first class, patient, know what they are  doing, give you direct contact details and their line manager details, ring back when they say they will. They have talked me through the dns changes so feeling a lot happier and not reliant on lots of "advice" from some from the IT world who I think were making this a lot more difficult than it was and wanting to charge. Glad I went through this - a lot of lessons learnt.

Thanks to all.

Interested in what they have done - PM if you don't want to post publically?

I've always stated, much to gixer's annoyance, that MS' support is excellent, leaps and bounds above the likes of Oracle and Redhat. Apple aren't even playing the support game (Genious Bar, my arse, staffed by thick mongrels).
