Keeping up with technology
« on: 11 November 2014, 17:58:43 »

Serious post.

On my recent visit to the Uk, it was highly noticeable that most folk seem to be buried in their comms device. I cannot imagine what it is they are doing (shop assistants particularly even while they serve you).

On Tv there was an ad for a tablet type device that did all sorts of things that when I was in an office environment(admittedly 11 years ago) you did with a paper notebook just as well and easily.

So do people find all the extra functionailty over and above voice calls and Emails actually any good, essential or just a nicety or a pain?

Does anyone else feel most technology is just a gimmick? I do. e.g. The car I hired in the Uk had a Bluetooth pairing function. Tried to do that with our UK smart mobile phone but concluded it doesn't have bluetooth. Didn't make a blind bit of difference to our lives.

Maybe it is an age/generation thing and the world belongs to the youth?

It's an age thing V. My Dad refused to acknowledge any possible use for a mobile phone. Until Amy became properly unwell and the rest of the family got on his case as they couldn't get hold of him.

He got a basic phone in those days an ended up texting etc along with the rest of them. Then stated showing interest in smartphones, Internet, email, online shopping, sat nav, music etc etc all on one device. He travels on holidays and lives his music, and ebay.

God he loves ebay. And old B+O hifi and tv's. Now you can't get him off his iphone. Loves it. Wait now, I'm just bidding on this thing! What ever it is. ;D

Yeah Dad. These mobile phones, no use at all are they ;D

Basically the idea is, you don't need a pc. As its now in your pocket. But as you say, the sun will still come up in the morning if you don't have one, or any internet access.

I can't remember the model number but when 3 announced that it was going to allow Skype in Uk (first of the operators to do it) our family snapped up three PAYG  (£30 inc £10 top up which we never used) phones. Might have been Zte? So they are quite old now and of course useless as Skype has gone from them a few weeks ago courtesy of Mr Microsoft.

But lets face it how would I know? How does someone know their car has common rail injection?

These phones, Varche?

If so then they're not even remotely what people would call a "smart phone" these days..

Bluetooth.

I cannot tell you how excited I am at that discovery!!

But you are right the phone isn't like modern Smart Phones.

I see it like this;

If I leave my keys in the house and go out, I'm locked out and cannot get in.

If I leave my phone in the house, I cannot call the Wife to let her know I've locked myself out.

Back 'in the day' you would memorise all the numbers of those around you and be able to tap on a neighbours door and ask politely to use their phone.

I don't know SWMBO's number..... It's stored on the phone.  Without my phone, I am lost..... without my keys......... well, I'll just phone her and get her to drop some keys to me.  Without both keys and phone, I'm cold, wet, hungry and swearing a lot.

I only know two mobile phone numbers other than my own, my Dad's .... learnt years ago before I had a mobile .... and my daughter's

I don't know my wife's, but she very rarely has it with her so no point in memorising it  >:(

Funnily enough, I know my Dad's too.... he has had the same number for ~15 years, as have I.

As for the wife, she always has her phone, but it's buried beneath the kitchen sink and the overflow for Boots (The Chemist) in her handbag.

Why do Women carry so much shite around?

 ;D    ;D     ;D

Waste of time ever calling SWMBO, it takes five minutes for her to find it in the bottom of her handbag  ::)

Latest technology ? Often I think it's a solution looking for the problem.

For me smartphone = Calls, Text, POP Email, very rare use of camera. That's it. Anything serious that I need to do waits and I use laptop or desktop at home.

I must be old fashioned. At home, none of the phones have any memories programmed. Invariable on the gayPhone, I dial manually rather than going to the effort of looking up a contact.

Jeez, I'm old.
