Compressors
« on: 24 November 2014, 21:01:48 »

Has anyone had any experience with any of the Compressors on the bay of thieves. Rhyas, SGS etc. I am looking to purchase a compressor around 10 cfm, with a preferably 50ltr tank. Got around £100 or so to spend. There are a few reasonable gravity guns around with varied nozzle set ups and 4-7 cfm output, which theoretically, should be ok for car panels, without too much hunting for air. I appreciate panels would be the limit, but as Omegas have loads of breaks, except bonnet and roof, I can't see too much of a problem. :y Never had any with one of my old compressor of that size.

I could kick myself for giving away my last compressor which came from a friends garage and would supply enough air to spray a fleet of buses. !!!!!!  :(

use small 0.8 gun.. its ok ..

only will take few minutes more for a panel..

but definitely not a whole car paint setup

last time I painted the clit bumper with a 0.8 in the paint cabin..

but you must install water and oil seperator on the line

I think you're going to struggle to get anything decent with that spec. for £100. Most around that price appear to be 24L, 7CFM. They aren't rated for anything like 100% duty cycle, either, and will overheat if you let the motor run continuously, so you'll need to plan for some breaks in your work both to let the air recharge and to allow the motor to cool. As such, you probably need to go a size or two bigger than you need on paper. I wouldn't be surprised if the CFM specs are optimistic either.

That said, the Ebay compressors all look basically the same as the Clarke / Airmaster ones that Machine Mart sell. I think they're probably all the same Chinese-sourced stuff branded differently. If that's the case I have one of the 7CFM 24L ones that's done me fine for probably 5 years or more now. Only used for tyre inflation and the odd use of a couple of air tools.

Some of them are oil free, which might be a good idea for spraying, not that I've ever done it myself.

I have a Rhyas .. or maybe it was Wolf Air, 50L 2cyl direct drive compressor - it's been fine for air tools, air dusters, tyre inflation, waxoyling etc though I haven't tried spraying with it I can't see why it would be any different to all that.

As Kevin says, they all look identical once you look past the colour they're painted ;D

In my limited experience of (poorly) spraying with a 25l compressor, it will need a regulator, which means limiting max air flow to get consistancy.

The small 25l was ok for my purposes, but I can see that proper spraying of a car panel would probably need more capacity, as the motor was running almost constantly, clicking off only briefly before firing up again. It did get hot.

But you really need input from someone with proper spraying experience.

I have twenty years of spraying experience, Chris. :y But I was using massive Broom and Wade compressors in a trade environment. I had my own compressor, which stupidly I gave away. :(  I appreciate regulators, filters, etc.
What I want is a small compressor pumping out enough cfm to satisfy a hvlp/lvlp on a low constant pressure, gravity fed gun.
I think I shall have to up my purchase price to get something really good. I was just enquiring if anyone had one of the e-bay jobbies to say whether good or bad.
There are a number of other outlets for compressors, but by far the best way to find out quality is ask others if they have/use one :y

Sorry, didn't realise that.

I shall bear it in mind though. :y

The LP guns normally operate at around 50 psi but do shift the air, a 50l litre would do a few panels before the pressure would be compromised.

I frequently use a smaller HVLP gun which is strictly speaking a touch up gun but, it does whole panels very nicely and is considerably more manoeuvrable then the bigger pressure fed and gravity gun I have.

So I would say a typical 8 cfm with 50 litre tank would meet that need.

Yep. Likely to be a queue forming once he's sorted with a compressor.  ;D

I have one very like this (it is made by ABAC), if you could get this for the right price it would be a good buy (although obviously more suited to someone closer to it!)......and only a new start cap required (I agree with the diagnosis)

Out of interest, Mark, which would you go for:

Belt drive single cylinder (like that one) or
Direct drive V-twin

Thought you'd say that.. I was contemplating switching my direct drive out for one, can't decide if it's really worth it or not*

(*The answer, based on usage alone is "probably not" ;D)

If buying one then always try tog et a belt drive as they are quieter, much more easily serviced and suffer less wear so last longer.

I would not swap out though
