Speed limit increase
« on: 30 November 2014, 19:25:33 »

I see that as of next March the speed limit is to be increased.........well for tractors at least!Yes the limit will rise from 20 to 25mph!!This may or may not be good news to those amongst us who live in rural areas or who regularly drive on roads inhabited by these vehicles. At the same time the weight limit for a tractor/trailer combo will rise from just over 24tonnes to a straight 31tonnes.An increase in the speed limit for HGV's is also proposed but as far as I know no firm date/new limit has  yet been set.

I've been working in Bridgwater the last couple of weeks on an Industrial estate where New Holland have a sales place.

I soon found out that each Tractor is taken for a spirited run around the Industrial Estate..... these bloody great big things must be hitting 40MPH with a trailer in tow, the driver bouncing around the cab like the bonus ball in a lottery machine.  ;D

Well I do believe it's been said by some that the speed limit is set by what you think you can get away with at the time!

Most of the new tractors these days(well real sized ones)have a 50k (kph) gearbox so are mostly capable of doing 30 mph, the JCB fastracs will do 40mph+ easily, even fully laden.

My lad has just got a new John Deere which is a big piece of kit and takes off from the lights at a surprising pace and leaves most cars standing ,(well till it hits about 20mph) ha ha !

Severalyears ago was travelling home along the A14 towards Bury St edmunds. A long line of trucks all heading for the sugar beet factory and the one on the end pulled out to pass. Oh no, a long wait for this to happen as the line of trucks was around twenty vehicles long. 60 mph we were doing behind this one and he passed the lot and pulled back in. It was a JCB fasttrac with a 40ft tipping trailer full of beet!!!

HGV speedlimts have all been raised, because mondeo man is now Audi man and he keeps moaning at hgv's doing 40mph on a roads and 50mph on dual carriageways. So Dave has upped the limits,to get votes.
Tractor trailer weights have been increased so the "poor" farmer can take more best to the factory,in his fastrac running on red diesel, thus not having to pay a local haulage firm a decent rate.also "poor" farmers vote for Dave.

Its sensible in my opinion, technology has moved on significantly in the last 40 years and you will probably find that these vehicles running at the new higher speeds are safer than the vehicles even ten years ago at the old speeds.

If I had my way though, there would be FAR less lorries on the road and overtaking would be banned between certain hours plus limited to only the two inside lanes (as it annoys the crap out of my on four lane roads where you get three lanes of lorries!)....

The Latvian's English will be easier to understand when you do the post-crash paperwork.
