Hows this for council cock up !
« on: 27 June 2008, 13:11:56 »

At the moment I'm fitting new appliances/sink/hob etc in our kitchen,
WELL as you know in order to fit sinks you need to turn off water at mains (there is no shut off taps undersink !
So our mains tap is outside down bottom of drive just outside our gates, well last year the council tarmaced the pavements, yup you guessed it they tarmaced over our mains tap so dunno exactly where it is & cant turn water off, not even if it were an emergency must admit never noticed it was missing till now, but not something you think about every day is it ?

Well done the council (NOT) >:(

On the premise that the tarmac will have been cheaply (thinly) applied; I`d get down on my knees and tap the surface of the footway with a hammer and listen for the (somewhat) more hollow sound of the area above the lidded stop-tap chamber. ;)
`Though the neigbours may think you`ve gone insane! ;D

I woud suggest you fitted a new stop cock in the house, once you have the water off, be better in a potential emergency. :)

You could try hiring a pipe freeze kit.
Freeze the water in the pipe, cut pipe, fix ballofix valve and bobs your uncle, you can carry on with any piping you have to do.

I thought you should have 2 stop cocks, one outside but within your house perimeter (within the garden boundry, and with a flip up metal cover), and then normaly as the cold water enters the house, in most cases under the sink

The law and the council are 2 completely seperate things matey.

Neither of them know what common sence is.

It's obvious in the middle of the night should a pipe burst that there needs to be one in the house.  Should there be any other issues there should be one out side.

Think it is more of a building regulation that an internal stop cock is fitted to mains incoming water.

The more i think about this, the more inclined i am to think the main comes in via a ground floor toilet,if there is one,or maybe an understairs cupboard.

Perhaps pipework and stopcock have been boxed in by a previous owner,if one.
Also wondered how a sparks would bond to the domestic side of the stopcock,if there is not one
