Dad, I want to be a dentist!
« on: 18 December 2014, 21:46:57 »

Can't imagine anyone wanting to be a dentist and inflict pain on folk daily on the way to hopefully fixing their teeth. Still the pay must be good after all the training.

I have had a lower molar troubling me for a few weeks and decided to bite the bullet.

Monday. All old crud removed, drains rodded and prodded and then capped.
Tuesday day of rest ( also known as the screaming ad dabs)
Wednesday Temporary stuff removed (this won't hurt much- true cos there was another double anaesthetic) More rodding, rawlplugs inserted and a couple of screws. Then a blob of stuff to hold it all in position. Wednesday evening and night spent exploring ceiling.
Thursday. No anaesthetic (unless you call wine at home anaesthetic) and some shaping and fitting. Good to go. The pain should reduce each day. It had better.

Cost 155 euros( about£130?) private (there is no NHS here) . I believe a crown is £214 in the Uk on the NHS. Can't see why it is so much when it is subsidised. maybe someone who has had one can confirm how much they paid.

Anyway good news is I am off to Bonny Scotland to test the hogmanay out.  Hoping for some real anaesthetic in a pint glass.

It was a few years ago now since I had a crown fitted & was a little under £200 ............ trouble is, I recently broke the tooth opposite where my crown is with a toffee  :(, dentist filled it (it's virtually all filling now) and I broke a bit off just yesterday ........... I feel a wallet battering soon  :'(

I think crowns are about £300. Implants? just add a zero?
My crown eventually broke so I told them to take what was left of the tooth out and now have a space. Handy for keeping things in.  ;D

Dentistry is almost a joke job, kind of perceived as 'not being clever enough to be a Doctor' type of profession. However, they really do have the last laugh, they're on a shedload, for, dare I say it, not much work. Ok, to put it another way, a Specialist in Heart/Brain Surgery or similar can kill you, they have to be very competent and know their job, don't let up for a second, or you/they're in deep schtuck.

Worst a dentist can do is do you a bad filling (as I've had) and you're saying 'my mouth hurts' weeks after and you get told 'oh, it'll be fine' etc... friend's ex partner is a Dentist and at the same practice there's another Dentist who consistently botches jobs, and he then ends up sorting them out. But no-one says anything because 'wellll, he's a nice guy, no-one got really hurt, no real damage done, eh?' etc..

Chatting to another he was thinking about getting a 911, and most likely the then-previous gen 996. I suggested the then current 997 was a vastly improved motor, so they say. He made a comment roughly meaning 'not much chance I could afford one of them' next  time I was in... 'Oh, bought a 997 in the end'   :o

Doesn't one like it when one suddenly realises one's budget for a car is £70k, rather than £30k??  :y :y :y

a mate of mine is a dentist, quite a good one but would never let him work on me,

he was bitching last year at having to work more than 2 days a week, there are 3 partners so they all do a couple of days each,
then someone suggested another clinic,  its not like he needs the cash,

Ha my wife's a dentist. It is a easy number, sat on your ass putting up with everyone telling you they hate the dentist lol.

The training is pretty long but also very hard, unfortunately most of the people from my wife's course were from other countries and have since left taking the qualification and money back home for them.

Thinking the only damage a dentist can do is give you a bad filling is pretty narrow minded. I won't pretend to know much about it but if they injected the anaesthetic in the wrong spot (5mm either side of the nerve I believe) then you could spend months looking like a stroke patient, also note that sweet spot is different on everyone!

I'm a spanner monkey so I don't know why she's with me lol
