MOT and Garages
« on: 23 December 2014, 21:10:29 »

Booked the 2.2 in for an MOT for last week and the day before the Test the CAT/front pipe gave up, Was weird how it happened, went shopping then nipped to McD for a coffee, sat and chatted, restarted the car and it sounded like I had fitted straight through pipes. :-X

Anyway, cancelled last weeks test, organized to get the pipe swapped out (had been advised the year before it was heading for failure by an exhaust company) one thing and another the replacement didn't happen so just took the car for the MOT yesterday regardless of the exhaust.  Obviously failed on the exhaust but was told the car was 100% in every other respect and rock solid underneath.

Car was in for replacement CAT this morning (bought of a OOF member last year :y) car was dropped back at lunch time.  Went back for the MOT retest and most of the staff had packed up for christmas ::).

Couple of phone calls and another coffee at McD's the MOT center owner had been home, had a bath and then came down to the garage and did my retest.

Mr Skruntie is now in Christmas mode (where's the Mistletoe)

Happy Christmas Mr Skrunts.......wish my Christmas was as nice. :(
Put the 2.5 Estate in for a new diss pack, due to a known misfire....seem to have spent the last two days in car spares picking up bits. Took diss pack, leads, and plugs in today....all my lovely car engine is laying all over the floor :( :( :( :(
Took the liberty of asking them to renew the wishbones, and have had Lemforders fitted. Would have gone for powerflex as in the 2.6, but due to technical reasons had to go emergency route which was Lemforders.
Also they are sorting the heater (or trying to) ( Still may get a visit TB) ;D
Now awaiting call to say car is done.
Only joy is all the work won't cost me anything, except what I have paid for parts.  ;)

The other part of my post that I forgot to add.

My car is a 2003 2.2 with 47,672 miles on it, only 1161 of them covered in the last 12 months.

Car was owned by my Mums neighber who I have known for over 40 years, genuine guy, washed and leathered the car weekly, polished it monthly, all repairs done by a local garage.

Looking at the invoices, the car had a new wiper mechanism (not cheap) fitted 2 years ago, a short exhaust system fitted for £440 in november 2010, and a few other odd jobs and now needed a new CAT at 47K.

I hate to feel this way but I think the garage took advanantage of my old neighber, even he couldnt understand why the wiper system had to be replaced.

Even asking different garages for a price to replace the CAT

£20 to £45 Plus Vat (depending on broken studs etc) :y
£80 Plus Vat  :o
3 didnt want to know
2 Wernt allowed to fit what they hadnt supplied

I think I should have considered build my own tyre and exhaust empire or garage when I was younger. :-X

When I get around to it, it shall receive the 2.2 centre pipes from ets/eternal and either a 3.0 back box or an Irmscher one if I can find one for sensible money...

How do ets/eternal compare to bosal.  Before I knew the CAT was the problem I rang round for a complete / part exhaust prices from cat back.  Couple of centres quoted £280/300 complete with 3 year warranty and bosal was mentioned by one of them.

Checked prices from both brands on ebay and it seems they make a hefty profit for fitting etc.
