Hi. I've got a new problem with my 94 Opel omega mv6 estate. The fuel pump sucks the tank flat when running. After driving for a couple of hours the car will just stop. Open the fuel filler and air comes rushing in to the tank. Then the car starts right up again. On inspection the tank is caving in (imploding) when looking under the car. Guessing this means the venting system is not working. So a couple of questions.
  Is there some easy way to disconnect a hose to the Carbon canister or something so it just vents to atmosphere? Does this create a fire hazard?
  How does the tank venting system work? And what is the most likely problem?
  How do i straighten the fuel tank out again? Compressed air through a hose to the tank?

The reason i want a temporary Quick fix is that the temperature in norway these days is -25 celsius and does not invite to much car repair:) any help is welcome.

Is the purge valve working? Connects one of the breather pipes to the cannister. Might be a sensible reason for it not working, ie any moisture in the cannister freezing and blocking the outlet

Simple solution is to leave your filler cap loose to allow air in. Don't leave it off to avoid spillage, merely loose enough to release the vacuum

Don't really want to be leaving the system disconnected elsewhere as the vapours will pool under the car when stopped due to the low temperatures...

Yes, compressed air to re-shape the tank, BUT I suggest using a foot pump not an air line or you will have the tank bulging and possibly creating a leak.  It will probably take only a few psi to re-shape things.
Re a temporary cure, I cannot remember the shape of an Omega cap, can it be drilled, it only needs a very small hole, and after you find the real cause the hole can be plugged with a self tapper.

As said by others, just drill a 1mm,hole straight thro the cap.Top to bottom. Will solve the problem till you can find the problem in a nice warm garage,

Hehe. Sorry for the confusion:) have left the fuel filler cap loose and that seems to do the trick:) cars been running fine all day and starts fairly easy even in -28 centigrade. Will check the problem if this weather ever changes:) thanks for the replies.

Well that was the easiest repair ever:) after driving with the filler cap loose this week i finally had to fill up the tank today. After putting around 40 litres in there there was a big "ka-thump!!" from under the car. The tank had regained its original shape and i could fill it up to 75+ litres:) tried to close the filler cap completely and drove home. Checked and no vaccum. Obviously whatever was frozen is now ok as the temperature now is just -6C. Wish every problem was this easy. Thanks for all replies and a happy new year to all:)
