Newbie profiles
« on: 22 November 2006, 23:12:14 »

Having had a good read of the boards tonight, it struck me just how many newby profiles are missing location and car details, with the result that their first plea for help is often met with replies like "Where are you?", "What year is your Meggy", "Is it auto or manual?, etc".

Not my place to say anymore (might lose one of my treasured two stars), so I'll leave it to the "Men in Black", aka "The Admistrators", to comment.

I know what you mean,

Did the same myself for a while, but then again I was a complete newbie to forums.

Don't know if there is a Newbie advice bit now, I'll have a look see.

Maybe it's worth putting it in suggestions. :y

I'll second that if we had more details of location model etc it would put us in a better position to give advice and help.Administrators how about making these details "required fields" for all members

Yup, i agree, just been reading suggestions area and newbies is one of the topics, gonna write a welcome guide tomorrow as TB has asked if someome will do one and i've just volunteered :o one of the things i was thinking about is trying to encourage people to give more details about their car, it may be  a simple case of some people just not knowing how to do these things :)

Trying to help a newbie blindly reminds me of the following story/joke:

Help desk gets the call from a receptionist whose tab key on the keyboard isn't working. "I told her to shake the keyboard upside-down and tap one corner on the desk." No luck. "I then told her to pick up one end about two or three inches off the desk and drop it. Hearing a loud thud, I asked what she was doing. She said, 'I am dropping one side of the laptop they just got fixed for me yesterday."

We will not make these required fields.  Some new members may never have used forums, or even the net much before, and with the current media frenzy on being careful with personal info may make some reluctant to fill in.  Hence we give them the choice to enter such info...

...we do not want to alienate members even before they have signed up fully.
