I don't totally agree with some of the above, the symptoms you have are more like those you see with a failing plug lead e.g. light throttle (requires lower voltage on plugs) OK, bit more and they break down.

Testing with a plug in atmosphere will tell you nothing as it only requires a few kV to breakdown air where as in a cylinder under compression with fuel in it you need closer to 30kV plus.....try it again with a gap of 35-40mm.

Usual symptoms of DIS pack failure is a loss of two cylinder pretty much all the time.

Also to the OP, some more advice... Listen to whatever Marks DTM tells you; he's always given me sound advice, and my car would not be running to this day were it not for him!  :y

Many thanks to everyone for their input and help. Will hopefully have time from work to get the required bits at the weekend and get my baby sorted. Have been a guest on this forum for a few years and got some great tips and guides!

Good stuff! Which leads did you go for in the end, if ye don't mind my asking? It helps the forum if we know that this make of so-and-so lasts for this amount of time, you know what I mean.  :)

Glad you're sorted now  :y

I got a set of ProSpark leads from EuroCarParts. For two reasons, EuroCarParts is few 100 yards from me and was a reasonable price to see if it was the leads that was the problem. Only problem with the set, leads are a bit longer than the ones in the car, down the right bank, about 3-4inches too long.

Be worth knowing how long they last, then. Some on here replace their cheap n cheerful leads once a year, as preventative maintenance. I'm aiming for 10 years our of my Bosch ones, ot only a few quid more than the ECPs, but I suppose time shall tell  :)

Damn right too  :)

I think I brought this up with Webby, who does the 'preventative maintenance' path with his leads, As I pointed out - let's say £25 once a year on some cheap n cheerful leads - well after 10 years, that's £250 - the same ballpark in price as Vx leads (and you can get that price down a heck of a lot lower that that, of course, as mentioned in a previous post of mine, easily under £100 for Beru) And at 16 years, and 220k, well, that's a theoretical mere £12.50 per year.  8)

I think safe to say, the Berus are an economical buy, in spite of their cost, well worth the money. I've gone Bosch, as mentioned, as an experiment, at under £30, good name, feel good quality, made in the UK, too. If they last half the time TB's Berus do (so 'only' 110k) they've been a good buy. Heard so much bad stuff about ECP, suppose it depends and luck of the draw

Precisely  ;D

As I say, and experiment. They're Bosch, at the price of ECP, so if they last no longer than the ECP cheap n cheerfuls, then no big issue, I've not paid any more... if they last half as long as the Berus, then I'm up. If they last as long as Beru at 1/4 of the price, then the drinks are on me!  :y

The HTs on the old girl lasted as follows..
96-03 BERU original
03-08 BERU 2nd set (boiled in engine oil thank you previous owner no knowing what an oil 'breather' is ::) )
08-14 laid up. Hibernating  :D
14-?? Bosch. Who knows?  :)

PS not knocking your preventative maintenance methods, Mr The Bear, of course. We've all got to tread our own paths with how we run the cars, and it'd be pretty useless if we all did the same thing, and bought everything from the Stealers.  :y

Completely agree mate :)

My own reasons for doing it is simply.... i actually wouldnt want a ten / sixteen year old set of leads in there. But again just personal preference :)
