I collared an appropriate 12 year old who downloaded this from Goole play. At first I thought the problem solved. Sadly not.

Is this a problem with all android phones?

Cheap ones possibly, works fine on every handset I have installed it on though.

Go to Settings, select Audio, and make sure there is a tick under the option "Volume Boost".
Also remove the tick under the "System Volume" option as your hardware may be castrating it.

If it's still low after that, it's down to the hardware which means you'll have to copy it to the PC, re-encode it with a higher audio level, and then copy it back to the phone.

Thanks for the info AndyRoid. Unfortunately, I have still not been able to fix the low volume problem. I have 'rooted' the phone, and tried to access the audio files using ES Explorer. Again, no success. I have tried looking for the correct files to change, but so far, the volume control files have eluded me. I may just have to accept that  it doesn't give good speaker / mic volume, which makes it as useful as a chocolate teapot:y

You have to turn the root option on in ES File Explorer as it is off by default, I use Root Explorer myself.

You aren't looking for any files to do with the volume control, you are looking for the file that controls the DAC (Digital to Analogue Convertor) gain however you still need to know what it is called and what entries to look for.

For example, in the S3 it is called "default_gain.conf", in the S4 it is called "snd_soc_msm_2x_Fusion3", and in the S5 it is called "mixer_paths.xml".

As it already works fine for the included video, my guess (as already mentioned) is that the volume on the file you are trying to play is too low to start with.

SUCCESS!!!

After no success with various file explorers, which only dealt with the volume on the speaker, I decided to see if there was a way to adjust the mic, volume, since I could only be heard with difficulty on the telephone.

I translated a web page from Russian. No, I am not bi-lingual, Google Chrome came in handy for this.

Upon their suggestion, I downloaded Mobileuncle Tools and went into engineer mode. Adjusted all the available levels on the mic to max, and we have sound. 

The Cubot 10 is a good smartphone. Just no instructions. And no after sales care. But what do you expect for £60.

£30 more and you could have had a Nokia Lumia, and I bet you wouldn't have to mess around with system files trying to make the thing actually work..

£60 more and you could have had a Samsung S3 or Motorola Moto G if you really wanted an Android thing..

An extra £250 and you could have had a decent phone..
