Talking of mobile internet and mobile phones...
« on: 17 January 2015, 16:29:54 »

...my S4 was faffing about. Turning itself off, cutting me off during calls, vibrating for no reason...just generally pissing me off. So I looked at what I had on it. Emailx2, internet bankingx2, weather apps, news, etc,etc......
SoI decided I could do without it all. Reset the phone, logged back in to google and that will do me. Phone calls and texts, fick the rest ;D

Works fine now.

My boy's S4 threw a bit of a wobble when 4G was introduced for some reason, resetting to defaults and even reflashing a stock ROM didn't seem to make much difference either.
Ended up installing Philztouch (custom recovery) and flashing it with PhoenixROM in the end.
Wasn't worried about tripping the KNOX counter as I'll do any warranty work if he really needs it.

Next handset for me is the Note 4 now I've seen it running a custom version of Lollipop.

How are you liking the Note 4? I was seriously considering it before getting the S5

And in plain english :o
The standard recovery on the S4 is very limited (clearing the cache and restoring a stock ROM is about all it allows), PhilzTouch recovery offers a lot more options including installing system files (an area the end user cannot normally access) and building an "image" of the system "as is" so the phone can be restored the way I want it in a couple of minutes.

Phoenix ROM itself has a number of tweaks and quite a few of the S5 features ported over (eg, keyboard, launcher, Flash player support, etc.
In short, it's what the phone should have been to start with.

Haven't got it yet.
My brother came over today and has a Note 3 running Aryamod v1.5 (custom version of Lollipop), now I've seen that I'm out tomorrow to get a Note 4 (that's all they have in stock now) so I can do the same.
It's a bit bigger physically than the S4/S5, but size isn't really an issue for me now I'm not in my normal working environment.

Everything I tried works quite well, and it's a darn site quicker than when it was on the standard ROM as well as the battery lasting much longer between charges.

I would wait till after the warranty is up before doing such things to them personally

I'm of the belief that once I have paid for it then it's mine to whatever I want with, especially as I have never seen software responsible for breaking physical hardware.
The closest I've ever come to trashing a handset was when I installed (an unknown to me) corrupt ROM that came from O2 and it ended up changing the IMEI to all zero's. 10 minutes with a laptop and the jig box saw the IMEI reprogrammed back to what it should have been so the phone worked again (would have taken the best part of 2 weeks if the phone (S3) had been sent back to Samsung for repair).
Besides, I've had enough of laying on the sofa watching "retard TV" so I figured I'd channel my mental energy elsewhere.

Still gobbledygook to me. :)
Probably best if you avoid installing various different types of software on phones then  ;D

Yeah that's understandable, I'd just be worried about if something went wrong with the device within the 12 months would the manufacturer or the place of purchase refuse the warranty claim if they found out you'd been doing things to the device  :-\

Speaking of Lolipop I believe it's available for the S5 now although not OTA yet (wasn't last I checked anyway) but is available using Samsungs software Kies 3, Is it worth updating now or is it best to wait a few months ?
