My 4x4 performs fine on dry tarmac when you are pushing it and it is fine off road in manky conditions . Where it is useless is in the wet on tarmac when the bank end wants to and does break traction very easily. I have only owned one car worse and that was a 1950's split windscreen Morris 803 (1000) . That was down to useless crossply tyres. I have had a good look at the back end for any worn bushes and had the shockers off and checked them so I think it must be the tyres.

The truck came with new Ovation tyres C C rating. The Michelin tyre dealer today told me they are great for delivery vans.....

Anyway I asked for the best tyres he could offer grip wise in the wet.

Shock 1. You have to have tyres specified for a 4x4 which rules out a lot of good car tyres!
Shock 2. The wear/fuel rating was worse than the Ovations and the best he could offer (Michelin Latitude X) were still only C for wet grip.   

My short list is
Michelin LatitudeX              FC71 (F is fuel/wear, C is wet grip - A is best, 71 is Db noise rating)
Goodyear Wrangler HP A/W  FC68
Bridgestone D-684              EF74

So question is what do those of you with 4x4's use and recommend for damp road conditions?

try Blackcircle.com They have the letter rating and noise levels symbols. By all terrain do you mean knobblies?  they will be great for lots of off road stuff and look the biz but I suspect fuel economy, wet grip and noise levels will be poor if you do any tarmac running.

I didn't get any coffee but, then again, I live in unrefined Barnsley. The receptionist offered me a blow job, but she looked a bit like Giant Haystacks.

Any of that shortlist will be fine obviously the Goodyears will be quiter.

I think that the Fuel efficiency rating is misleading, as the lower rated tyres have a greater rolling resistance than a higher rating so an F rated tyre will provide better traction than an A rated one... wet grip is mostly down to tread pattern, so a higher rating for wet is preferred... EB would be a good target for a car tyre in my meagre experience but FC is not too bad for a tyre that has off road ability

Hmm,
know what your saying about the wet grip, however the road surfaces in spain are just no good! an in the wet lethal,the omega just lit its rear tyres up,(english tyres)
creaky jeep frontera wet road? slow down useless
english tyred rangerover diesel? just slid everywhere,
our mitsubishi, even with just 70odd horsepower spins it rear wheels in the wet,
my T4 chipped 2.5tdi, forget it 1st 2nd and 3rd gear, it just spins its wheels crap!
so I firmly believe its the raod surfaces out here mate, never a problem in the dry,
but when wet dont matter where you are the road surface just offer no adhesion owing to the tarmac,
save you money and drive gently!

Is that just the heat drawing the oil ouyt of the road, making the surface nice and smooth? Almost sticky in the dry but lethal with a bit of moisture on it

Funny thing about the roads here, you maybe right . We try and avoid driving anywhere the first day it rains after months of dry weather. There are always loads of accidents, bit like first fog of year in UK.

Now got new shocks fitted on front. That has improved things a bit.
