Maroon cars
« on: 22 January 2015, 00:58:26 »

Just been looking at Bigtimes post showing his new Omega, love the colour, but have to ask the question....how well do modern 'Maroon' cars hold their colour.
Back in the 'old days' and my spraying career, that colour was a total bitch. Well renowned for honeycombing or bleaching. I am talking of the days of the A40 Farina, and Ford Corsairs, etc.
Do the modern paints 'behave' themselves. I could not count the amount of spray work done to that colour, mainly roof, bonnet and boot in that era.
But...I love that colour of Omega......I would consider one myself...or a total re-spray, but don't want bleaching or such.

My Reuben's Red 2003 is still a deep, shiny maroon and has not been detailed. It's not garaged either.  :y

When it's a solid red, they're famous for going pink, of course. Our old Cav Mk III SRi I remember when I were a boy, in Bordeaux Red was 'unfaded' as I recall. I'd say don't go losing sleep over it, 'tis fine :)

Darker metallics seem less prone to fading than some solid colours. My mate had a red pink VW Polo which had faded terribly... a friend of his sisters had a white one the same age, and that was matt white in places for the same reason... oxidation of the laquer... flatted back with 1400 grit wet and dry and given a bloody good polish and both cars were almost presentable  ::)

Metallics are not  problem as they have the lacquer coat which takes the beating unlike solid colours where the pigment and outer layer oxidise (they don't tend to fade more lighten with oxidisation and hence why you can compound them back to a deep shine and bright colour again, modern synthetic wax helps a lot to protect them to)

As I said on another thread, that Rubens Red (and similar, such as Rover's nightfire) always seem to be quite durable, and always shine up nicely when washing.

The Diplomatic cars aren't what you think though, ignore the badge because they are more akin to 3.2 Elites. The one I used to see regularly ferry the then Home Secretary around to certain places I used to work had bullet proof glass, run flat tyres, strobes behind the grill (control buttons mounted on the angled trim either side of the handbrake) and additional LED reading lights on the C posts. It also had a Range Rover glued to it's arse all of the time as well.

So the badges were a pretty rubbish red herring then ::)
