Any coin collectors around....?
« on: 22 January 2015, 19:45:02 »

My Mum passed away at the weekend and I have in my possession her commemorative coin collection....

Most of them are £5 coins and commemorating Battle of Britain and other military things...

What I need to know is how much they might all be worth.... Im not wanting to sell them, it's just a ball park figure for insurance...

Anyone serious that could possibly send me a PM and I can take pictures etc...

I also have a full 22ct gold full sovereign and also a 22ct gold half sovereign too.... I have an idea how much these may be worth through Ebay...

Any help appreciated please :)

Thanks

I dabble a little in collecting money but mainly older real tender, so not really my cup of tea.  I have some lovely mint condition one bob notes numbered sequentially from the last batch ever made.

One thing I can tell you is that eBay will rarely reflect the price you can get direct to a real collector.  Bide your time, make some enquiries and dont settle :y

Iv had a look on the website where my Mum was buying the coins from and a couple are quite a substantial amount to buy new, I'm hoping to take them to be valued at a jewellers in Bolton who specialises in coins...

Can only repeat the sentiments already said - very saddened to hear your news.

Been dealing in various bits n bobs for a few years now, and not massively surprisingly the sovereigns are the most valuable. Nice little best-kept secret is try the oldgoldshop - they're based in Coventry - but regularly give the best prices, nationally. (I have NO affiliation with them, I must just say  :))

We used to sell the £5 coins for £5-6, which isn't exactly stellar, but they're collectable items, nonetheless, and legal tender, of course. Just be aware that some may be the 'crowns' which at a glance look the same, are the same dimensions and weight but often worth just 50p/£1 on ebay etc.. and can be bought wholesale for 25p each.

A lot of people get prices wrong, because they see what price something is advertised at, of such as ebay. This isn't the same as what it's worth, of course. The arguments I've had to have with people, who have claimed adamantly that "I want blah blah for this item, it's worth this amount" - I then take them on ebay, show them - they point excitedly "look! there - they're worth that much. Told you" Where I politely point at the one a few down, and about a quarter of the price, with no bids. Cheapest to sell on ebay recently was £175 - up to £4800 for an 1841 example. Couple of years ago now, but full sovereigns were regularly priced at £225 in the shop I worked at.

Don't forget, certain years of sovereign are more valuable - The Mint only make so many every year, and any unsold at the end of the year were/are melted down, and restruck the following year.

Always get a few valuations, too, before selling. The place I worked at was great - in that it didn't buy and sell, just rented the display cabinet space; so it wasn't in our interests to 'beat the seller down on price or talk/con them into the item being almost worthless, then buy it off them' - any dealer, by definition will have to offer less than its worth, how else can they pay their bills. As you're clearly not just after the money, you simply want to know what you've got, then time is on your side and you can take it at your own pace.

I hope I've spoken some sense, and also hope all goes well with the family rubbish which sadly follows bereavement, as I've found in the last year. All the very, very best.  :y

Sorry to hear about your loss.

I can't help you with valuation but I think taking them to have them valued is a good idea.

A cousin left me a bizarre coin collection which actually is worth very little but is a great talking point. The condition of most of the coins leaves a lot to be desired. I have had a lot of pleasure out of researching them and putting notional values on them. I have a couple of penny cartwheels for example.

Thanks for the condolences fellas, much appreciated :)

Im under no illusion that these coins are worth thousands or even hundreds and Ebay does give a bad representation of what they are worth too...

I will contact a place in Bolton that specialises in rare and collectable coins, so they should give me some sort of valuation...

Things are dragging their heals at the moment and everything is in limbo as we (me and my sister) are trying our best to organise things for funeral arrangements etc... Im sure there a few people on here that have had to do the same thing... Its very hard to do as can be appreciated... the hardest thing is when we are saying good bye to Mum and then having to sell her house.... I cant afford to buy my sisters half and she cant afford to buy my half so its going to be sold and split 50/50 between us... such a shame really as I have terrible neighbours and my Mums house is ideal for me and my wife and family to live in...
