car with spanner symbol
« on: 31 January 2015, 22:47:35 »

Ok so I've picked up my new Omega 2.2 and I was aware of the cat blowing. What I wasn't aware of was that after 5 minutes of driving the car with a spanner through it comes on. Car drives fine, picks up fine. Anybody got any ideas please?

Being a 2.2 you need a code reader of some sort to find out what is means.

If you post codes here, help will follow  :y

Thanks Steve, wish I had one. Hoping mate can sort it out for me later in the week as he has the equipment,  was hoping someone might know of a common fault.

There are 2 lights, one for emissions issues and the one you have for everything else. So unfortunately without codes or symptoms very hard to help.

You only need a very basic (cheap) reader to get the codes.

I know it's not the emissions light as I had that with my Vectra, 3 years I had that car and for 3 years I've had a problem with the emissions. Could not get to the bottom of it. Hope this is an easy fix, can't be going through that again.

Blowing cat is likely to knock the trims out, but that would be emmisions light (spanner one flashing). Cam sensor also common on 2.2, but that gives the symptom of being a shit to start.

Get it on your mates code reader, rather than guess. Given that there appear to be no symptoms, we don't what to change parts on a whim :y

Do both the Engine Management Light and Spanner light come on when ignition switched to 2 prior to starting? Not uncommon for the EML to be, er, missing ::)

EML is the "spanner" light :) Emissions is the "engine" symbol

That's what its supposed to be, but GM, bless 'em, cross confuse one with the other.  In essence, both have to be taken to mean EML  :(

My bro has lots of success in his Hyundai tank...   ...well now that it actually has a cat (duff maff wiring caused the previous cat to just disappear)

Never heard of Cataclean????

Ok well the car is going to mates tomorrow so after he's gone through it we'll hopefully have more of an idea. Incidently I've been driving around in it today and it hasn't come on once but admittedly I have stuck some fuel in it as the tank was lower than I thought. £25 worth of super unleaded.

Thanks guys for the advice, fingers crossed it gets all sorted easily.
