recommendations for free AVI video file editing prog?
« on: 08 February 2015, 14:01:00 »

Every once in a while I capture something on my dash cam that I would like to edit out. e.g. a wild animal running across the road and send it to my dad as an attachment to an EMail

I don't want to spend any money particularly unless there aren't any free progs around. What easy to use does anyone else use please.?

Had a similar problem before I got dash cams that recorded in MP4

Is it a Chinese camera by any chance?

Sure I used a free program called handbrake on the recommendation on here, I did also find another free software although it was only a trial which lasted a few days and needed deleting and reinstalling to use again.

I will try virtual dub first as that is AVI focussed. Thanks for all suggestions.

Yes it is a cheap Chinese camera. It works just fine for my needs. Technically I legally can't use one in Spain.

I doubt for one minute that WMM will recognise the container that has been used to create the original file, especially a cheap chinky camera.
Wouldn't surprise me if Varche has to transcode the video file back to a format that Virtualdub can work with to be honest.

Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Haven't had a chance yet.

Yer my  Windows 7 didn`t come with movie maker so try here for a free download.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/get-movie-maker-download

On the dashcams I`ve got the files can be motion jpeg .AVI & .MOV or MPeg . I was surprised to find that WMM can handle MPEG-4 movie files.

go here for the file types WMM can handle
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-live/movie-maker-file-types-faq

Probably get jumped-on for suggesting anything from Microsoft  :P
I`m no expert :-X but just tried WMM with the files that some of my cameras churn out.
Having said that,  powerful processors & bags of memory do help with cutting down the editing time. I now use Sony Vegas to Handle any HD file editing.
One problem with video is the file sizes generated, so another option I use, is to edit & upload unlisted video to Youtube & then just email the link to friends & family.  Youtube compression loses some of the video quality,  but HD file sizes are huge. :y

MPEG-4 is just a container and has been quite common for ages, if it were wrapped in (say) a .MOV container then I doubt it would be recognised by default.

Which is what makes them susceptible as a vector for malware
