« on: 02 July 2008, 19:46:29 »

Am considering an upgrade to Sky + when I move.

On the Sky + Box, can an external hard drive be added, or even better can they be added to a network to transfer recordings to a computer?

Any help would be appreciated.

TIA.  :y :y

Does that mean I can add an external hard drive then, or is that networking you are refering to.?

No. you can't do sod all.

You can replace the HDD with a larger one, though this is a pita, and obviously invalidates any warranty.

I use MCE instead, any pc on network can view recordings, and Xbox360 is an Extender (ie, use the MCE interface, but in another room, to watch, schedule, delete etc).  Can also set remotely (and watch if bandwidth good enough) using a freebie addon called WebGuide by ASCII

Depends what you watch but I cancelled Sky last year saving £50 per month - the Sky box and dish still work fine for unencrypted stuff but I have got Freesat HD as well with a Maplins switch to work between the Sky box and the Goodmans freesat HD unit  - the PVR/HDD versions for Freesat may be out by Autumn - keep your eye on this and save yourself some money. If you want Sport consider Setanta although they have just mugged everyone upping the price from £9.99 to £12.99

No real interest in sport.  Sky pissed me off when they moved the American Wrestling (Fake I know, but have watched it for years)(TNA is on for a couple a week)

Sky is actually a complete waste of money, so many repeats etc etc, so many repeats etc etc, so many repeats etc etc.  opps, been watching sky.

I really ought to look into all the freeview options.  :y

Any advice here would be very helpfull.

TIA.   :y

If you want to play look at the Topfield models, USB connectors and you can add on your own software.

The Humax 9200 is pretty good

The TVonics is made by Sony and designed by ex Sony employees who designed their early Freeview tuners (which were about the best there were at the time)

If you have BT Broadband they will GIVE you a free PVR with IPTV fascilities

Or you can build a PC to do it

This is my plan.

I have looked at the Humax a while back, but I think availabily was a problem at the time.

My house at the mo has a naff aerial, so I rely on sky, dish is fine, just had a new LNB and 2 replacmentt boxes, as I tore a few strips off Sky and told them I was leaving.  The 1st box was a recon, lasted about 2 weeks before problems (lock ups) started.  Got a brand new box.

Should be moving home sometime this year when I find something suitable.  New Digital aerial planned and possibly Sky+.  Looked at a Flat allready but it didnt have a dish, and the aeriel didnt look sparkling.

Am looking for as many recording possibilities as possible.  Maybe a dual tuner unit with a big HD.  and maybe a TV card in the computer.

Allthough we can never futreproof these things I want to have as many possibilities as possible.

I have a NAS box which is plugged into my hub, so where ever possile I would prefer units with networking capabilities.  if not then at least USB 2 or better for adding external drives.

Just been looking at this but no HD recorder, also dont know how many feeds they will need.

I know Sky + requires 2 and Sky HD requires 4 feeds from a quad LNB

I'm with Virgin Media aka ntl & they have some good priced packages, obviously its cable & not everyone can connect unless its in your areas/street but had it a fair while now (ntl) and suits my viewing plus you get Setanta sports not brill but ok the boxes can be abit iffy having to switch em off to reset em but its not that bad, like I pay as a package
Telephone line rental & TV pckge                                £12
2MB Broadband internet  (as like gaming online)          £18
Mobile phone  using your own moby          £10    300 mins + 300 texts
Wifes moby too (now just set it up)           £10      same

Total             £50/month

Never use house phone apart from the odd 0800/0845 numbers & weekend calls (free) and incoming calls

Nope no shares in Virgin just think its a good deal for me . :y

Cable is sadly lacking in my area.  They covered most of Sheffield when they started, did a few area's arround Rotherham and then just took the attitude of, we now have enough covererage to make it pay and that was it.

The area where I am considering moving to is a rural area., quite high up but no cable, and my ADSL may drop to just over 2mb from my current 7MB due to distance from local exchange.
