Urgent question ref rear shocks
« on: 20 March 2015, 13:12:17 »

Got the back end of my Mv6 Estate up in the air and stripped down for suspension overhaul / cleaning / painting.

Removed the GM shocks and pulled the Bilstein B4's out of the boxes.
The new B4's have a steel insert which is pushed through the rubber grommet on the suspension end.

Am I right in thinking that this needs to be pushed out so that the new shock can be fitted ??
Can't see any other way of doing it  :-\
I have checked the part numbers and things are okay on that front  :)

TIA  :)

Steal insert is part of the shock.

Lower rubber bush is PN#90447245 fitted from underneath into hole on chassis rail. Part number facing down.

Upper rubber bush is PN#90250288 fitted from above. Part number facing up. It's an interference fit onto top of lower bush.

Metal bush fits up inside lower bush, and eventually once tightened through the upper bush. This locates the strut rod true and packs out the rubber bushes to prevent movement. A washer is needed both top and bottom of the assembly... bottom one to securely locate the mounting on the shock, the top one to allow the nut to clamp the assembly to both the body and the shock :y

Steal insert is part of the shock.

Insert is pushed through the rubber grommet on the end of the B4's

On the bottom of the rear hub on the omega, you have a round shaft which would slide into the rubber grommet if the insert was removed.

I'm wondering if because these shocks are used on more then on vehicle, the insert is there for that purpose and needs to be removed for the omega  :-\

Yes the insert has stuck in the trailing arm. That can either come out, or fit the new shock grommet over it left in place.

You talking lower mounting?,

If so you should have socket machined into the trailing arm... if you still have a rusty bush there, then you haven't quite removed the old one... old shock should look like the new one... offset bush through the lower rubber :y

Mole grips and a bigger hammer are you friends  ;)

Saloon ones have the spacer bonded in on most shocks. Estate runs the shock at an acute angle so needs to be more flexible.

Think the estate ones are also bonded in, certainly more than a push fit ime... pivot angle is about 100°out from the saloon ones... wheel has to come off to remove the bolt :y

That said, Bilstein may assemble their shocks differently... GM ones are powdercoated with the bush in place :y
