Aux Belt - which? and where?
« on: 28 March 2015, 21:28:07 »

For my 1996 2.5 V6 drive belt, looking online on Eutocarparts...

£15.16

Is ECP the way to go? Or are there any other one out there - or is main Stealer the easiest/quickest? Thanks!

Just be careful it's long  enough ..... IIRC there were some pattern belts that were a bit short so loading the alternator/water pump bearings

Some V6s have a slightly smaller alternator pulley and the 'correct' aux belt is 10mm shorter as a result.

I have never had a problem with a belt from a dealer but once had to return the belt bought from a motor factors based on their parts book.

Thanks chaps. Vx list 4 belts - ECP list two. But the other ECP one appears to not fit vehicles with Air Con.

As ever, looks like getting a drive belt seems to be a bit of a 'minefield!'  ::)

As ever you need to ask what the potential cost of buying the wrong one from ECP is... Fuel/time/hassle versus simply buying the correct one instantly from Vx...

A bit like a ten mile detour to save 1p a litre ::)

And as TB is often quick to point out, sod all point bitching about non TC prices of you CBA to spend £25 Joining Abs :-X

Yes indeed. Looking at ECP and that CP4L place (which appears to be identical in all but name) they supply two belts, one stated for air con, one without. They

-Claim Contitech (so I'd say damn good quality, having just fitted one of their Cambelt kits)
-Approx third cheaper than Vx at £15 vs £26
-Can be posted to me by tomorrow, don't even need to go to the Stealer

However...

IF they send a Contitech - it's in their terms and conditions they can send another 'of equal quality' if stocks are low
IF it's right - they also say in their T & Cs that there may be slight differences in engines for certain cars, so you've effectively no guarantee whatsoever that it'll fit. For me that's like a  builder saying that the mortar used 'may occasionaly be of substotuted for flour and water, so we cannot guarantee the wall will stay up' how bizzarre!

In this instance (and they've got one in stock, too!) as you say hassle of the wrong one, fuel, and everyone I know having to hear about it, I'll be heading to the Vx dealer today or tomorrow. :y

This isn't rocket science, or even difficult. DON'T MAKE IT SO!
Is the belt on the car, still in one piece, and did it work OK? If so, there will be a number like 6pk2260 printed on it. This is the belt width/number of ribs/length. It will enable you to buy an exact replacement from any motor factor/bearing supplier/machinery specialist in the world without any buggering about. They will cross that number with whatever brand they supply - Gates or Continental are the likeliest.

:-\ Wasn't 'bitching' about non-TC prices, and it's not a case of 'CBA' to join ABS - I have, and regularly buy from Vx dealers using the Trade Club. I was, in fact, agreeing with you.  :y

Also will look at the belt itself, then, ta Nick.

I needed one for 2.2 today - popped to local VX, he handed me one and I fitted it  :y

This worked much better than when I used a online retailer, got 2 incorrect lengths and gave up  :-[
