Started my 2.2 DTi outside the house, started fine. Drove ten miles, stopped for diesel. Got back in, battery flat, dim dash lights, v v slow turn over.

Bump started straight away (joys of a manual!) but even after a run home, won't go on the key

I'm guessing no value in charging it, I doubt I'd trust that battery again!

What's the correct spec battery for the DTi please?

Regardless of alternator I'm going to change the battery, it's the wrong one for the car, and I've always known this (physically far too small) - if you know the correct battery that would be great - I think a GM one would be best

65Ah or 70/72Ah will be fine - in other words, the ones you use on V6's. As it's a standard size battery tray (same as any other Omega) you struggle to get anything much bigger in.

If alternator has issues it might be worth contacting Serek as I sold him my DTi Elite for spares a while back so he may have an alternator off that still.

Oh and a GM 70AH battery is (or used to be) part number 93189922.

I will check the output - gut feeling though is that alternator is fine and dandy, I think I've just killed the battery.

I used it when Steve's battery died and it took a hammering cranking over a v6 for some time - to be honest I'm surprised it's lasted as long as it has

It's a 65ah one, part number 93189923, and on the label is printed 12 01 213 - which I'm guessing it means it was made in January 2013...

I tried it on the car - flat as a pancake, won't illuminate the dash lights - but I've put it on charge, it might keep me going for a bit

Very pleased with it. I've always used Bosch S4 batteries on all my cars.

Pop the caps off, unscrew under the labels, and top the electrolyte up with distilled water... then charge it

Yep I took the caps off to do that, but in my surprise, the fluid levels appear spot on... I'll take that as a good sign that it will hopefully take a charge

To be honest, I've topped up batteries before, used 'bat-aid's' but it never magically transforms an old battery, I just used to use all the old batteries for the caravan, but now we are caravan-less I now use them to power some LED lamps in the sheds.

Once you've left a battery long enough to go completely flat it's probably had it or it's close enough that it will let you down in short order IME.

Much more to it than the battery, though. Alternator output? Glow plug relay stuck on? Some other electrical drain? Poorly crimped battery / alternator / starter / chassis / engine negative connections?

Yep, a lead acid kept at below 90% charge for any period of time will sulphate its plates up.....game over

Just checked my Service History, and found new Vx battery was £70, which compares well with others out there (Exide, Bosch etc) and a bit cheaper than some places for cheapo / nonames. A little note - I went in for a 65 ah, was told it was £80 or thereabouts - "out of interest" I said "how about the next one up - a 70ah?" - was quoted less at £70! The Parts guy then looked a bit befuddled and tried to tell me why would I want that - it's not the right one for your car, but I was having none of it  So some will say that the genuine Vx ones are a good whack dearer than equivalent ECPs etc - which they [65ah] are - but the 70ahs are actually cheaper (or were about 4 months ago)
