So I've found the cause of my sudden loss of coolant the other day...... The top heater hose popped off of the matrix! 

Good news that it's nothing catastrophic, but putting it back on I can't slide the ring forward and when I try and tap it forward it slips off the push fitting.    So I think that the cause was simply that I didn't fit it properly last time.   

Obviously I'm keen to get it right this time, I'm thinking that the fitting should slide onto the matrix pipe with a nice clunk and then the ring should slide forward quite easily?    What does the green ring do? Is it necessary?

Green ring is a kind of filler piece to prevent the actual clip from compressing and therefore releasing accidentally... belts and braces, with velcro

You'd think so. I just can't get the ring to slide forward properly as the green ring seems to be locking it. If I give it some welly, both rings come right off the fitting......

Leave it hanging on the pipe then... fairly sure mine are loose between the connection and the bulkhead, and to the best of my knowledge have never been disturbed
