Omega B Caravan MV6 3.0 - Timing Belt Doubts
« on: 01 April 2015, 23:23:06 »

Hello,

My Omega is making a strange sound... not very loud but it's not the usual smoth and quiet sound from X30XE!
Anyway, the mechanic suspects that the sound is coming from the timing belt or related. I really don't know but I'm sure that he goes towards this way and I'll have to buy a
proper timing belt. The one that stands there is from gates and was replaced at 30.000Km ago it's half way right?

What's your opinion about INA timing belt kits for 52£? Is it worse?
Or Dayco KTB397 Timing Belt Kit for 59£?
Gates / Contitech / Goodyear / Bosch ? Wich one should i go for?

Thank you.

Oe suppliers were gates, conti and skf.

Service interval is 40k or 4 years, which ever is soonest.

Timing belt replacement means replacing the rollers and belt as a kit. NOT just the belt. It's the rollers and the bearings that fail, not the belt itself.

40k miles is 62k km... so 30k km is indeed about halfway on distance, question really is when was it changed? If nearly four years ago, then it is due on time :y

Having examined the old kit that recently came off my Old Girl the other week, can say as per the OOF advice, every 40k and 4 years is the time. Mine had been on for approx 8-9 years (7 of those years SORN on the driveway). The pulley felt fine (done approx 27k), but the belt was showing signs of minor cracking all over when flexed. So under normal wear and tear, I'm sure the bearings/pulleys would have started failing after the 40k, but as proved, age does affect rubber, and the 8 years of age on the belt is showing.

As said, it's the bearings that fail. In theory you'd probably be fine leaving your original belt on for 80k... however, you get a belt in with the kit, so literally no point whatsoever in re-using the old belt.

It's the biggest cost on an Omega, approx £400 at a Dealer - but if you want to tackle it yourself (and it's really not a bad job once you've done it, I was surprised how easy it was) the advice on here is second to none. As you have found, under £100 will buy you a kit, half a day set aside will see you back on the road for another 4 years. Call it £25 per year, so not a terrible cost in real terms.

If you think Vauxhall charge a lot for an Omega timing belt, Renault want £1100 for a V6 Avantime! They insist it's an engine out job, DIY says otherwise.

Phew! No, indeed, it's not a bad price, really. As per a recent thread, given the time it takes to do the job, the money Vx charge isn't bad, really. Again, given that £120 (at genuine Vx prices) of that cost is in the timing kit itself, so the job/labour itself something like £280 of that £400.

To be honest, ok I've done one now, but given the time and faff and worry of getting something wrong, if someone came to my door and said 'Ill pay you to do my Omega timing belt' under £300 for a professional* to do the job doesn't sound terrible. Also at a Stealer you've lots of comeback if something's not right. Also lots of other garages simply will not touch the job.

*Whether we consider Vx Masterfit peoples as 'professionals' is for another thread, but we understand the context in which I mean this phrase  :y

Might be worth running it for a few seconds with the aux. belt removed just to confirm it's the cam belt.

Aux belt tensioner bearings can get noisy, and eventually fail and throw the belt off. It's not unusual for other ancillaries to get noisy either (alternator, water pump, air-con clutch, etc.).

Actually a very good point, agree with Mr Wood. I heard a very faint whine from 'that area' - did the timing belt as it was due, but come to think of it, haven't checked if the noise has gone away - could well be the aux belt. Worth checking  :y

Good point!
What about the timing belt kits?
I belive that a proper one should be around Gates or some high end brand such as Continental, SKF...
But I've found one of those really cheap from INA and DRAKO!
What can you say about those?

Never heard of them. I'd stick to the known good suppliers. Is it really worth the risk on components that could be so costly if they fail?

Depends on the value of the car and the depth of ones wallet, which are questions only you can answer.

But if your asking me personally, I'd only use gates conti or skf.

Again, never heard of them. (Heard of Drayco for belts, but no idea they did the whole kit) Only ever heard of OOFers using Gates or Contitech, and SKF (genuine Vx use SKF bearings, as does my Contitech kit)  :y

That's cheap.  8)

If you zoom in on the left hand pulley on the back plate picture from the Dayco link, and examine the stamp it starts off with SKF.  Which would suggest to me that this kit is using SKF pulleys and tensioners?  :-\
