So I fitted poly bushes to the front wishbones a couple of days ago due to it trying to fling itself in the hedge whenever I touched the brakes and although it's improved, it still pulls to the left a bit when I brake. 

I've had a good look around again this afternoon and the only thing that I can see is that there is some play in the rear wishbone bushes.  I can move the wishbone up and down about 3 - 4 mm? Is that normal? 

The wishbones are ATP and are about 8 months/10,000 miles old. TIA!

Nope. That's bad. Vary bad.

Does it still squeal? If so spray some silicon lube on the faulty bush. If that cures it, confirms bush oppsed. X

Bummer!    Looks like I'll have to refurb my old wishbones then... 

I checked the top mounts and they were both nice and tight, and although there was no obvious play I 'nipped up' the steering idler knut and the squeal/cracking noise has stopped.    The steering idler has probably done over 60,000 miles.

Well if it works....     

IIRC it was fitted by a garage circa 2007 in the days when I was much wealthier and didn't like getting my hands dirty anymore.    I think they charged me 50 or 60 quid, so almost certainly a pattern.   

What sort of bush do they have? rubber or poly? By tightening it up I guess I've crushed the bush and the whole thing is tighter.    Not that I could feel any play in it before....

Am I right in thinking that recommended bush for rear wishbone is Vx?  Seems like there is the usual variety and prices to match. 

What about the ball joint? I guess if the other bushes are oopsed then this isn't far behind.

Given the vast length of time the Vx ones will last, when I rebuilt my wishbones I opted for Poly front, genuine Vx rear, and also genuine Vx balljoints (though other makes like QH are perfectly sound, I just happened to get mine cheap)

Indeed, VX for rearward bush circa £15-20 each last time I bought some... there is a poly alternative but it isn't an approved mod

As for ball joints, I have found Delphi ones from local factors perfectly fine for £11 each

As Al says, Steve....I got mine from Vauxhall in Wycombe, had to get them in for the next morning, and they cost £40 for the pair (bushes, that is)

Ideally pressed, but you can improvise with a freezer, four strips of flat steel bar and a couple of G clamps

Pressed in ideally, although you could probably do it in a vice with the correct size socket to press them in. I pressed mine in and there was no great tonnage required to get them in. Just make sure you start them off square and they go in quite easy. Remember that they stick out the other side so you need to rig something up to support the bush ring on the other side to allow it to pass through.
