Hi

I'm thinking of waxoyling my omega to try and keep it clean & rust free

Any recommendations of what product I should use for best results?

Brush any loose bits and dirt off, then coat evenly and thoroughly with brushable Waxoyl... should be less messy than spray on 

Other people might have better/different suggestions

Have a scour of other forums, classic car guys etc... you'll find that no-one aside from the 'weekend mechanic' uses the stuff. It's the brand that everyone's heard of, but the Classic car world has long since migrated from Waxoil. Mainly because it tends to have the nasty habit of hiding and sealing rust and moisture underneath Plenty of people peeling of 30 year old layers of Waxoyl to discover rotten chassis.

I was as surprised to read of this, always brought up on the stuff. But people are putting their money into POR15 and Rustbusters Mastic 121 and the like nowadays. Then apply a rubberised underseal, just like Opel did at the factory.

As Taxi Al says, it's always going to be an area where 20 people will have 20 equally valid opinions, each equally sure what they use is the best stuff. Personally like I say originally, look on classic car forums, because there'll be more experience rustproofing say 50+ yr old Beetles or Minis or Austins than a maximum of 21 year old Omega. Omegas are only now suffering from their original factory protection starting to let tot serious rot in - a TR2 will have had possibly two or three 'restorations' in its life, various products used, with varying degress of success

Yeh I have a different recommendation based on the fact that Waxoyl washes off wherever you spray it after driving the car on the first wet road you see.

Use Bilt Hamber Dynax S50, but ensure the areas are prep'd properly beforehand.

Heard about the Bilt Hamber stuff, too. Haven't used it personally, but when I do come to rust treating / undersealing my Lady, that's probably the stuff I'd be going for. Couldn't rememeber the name of it before.

the POR15 and 121 Mastic I mentioned are excellent as re-doing all the bits that are satin black, so wishbones and the like. Very stonechip resistant.

Always found waxoil to be ok,,,,,brushing is a bit messy when the stuff runs down your arms when do the floor underneath..i always do it on a dry day and do not use the car for 24 hours to allow it to set/dry..never had a problem at all.....cant say about the other makes as never been tempted to change brands as they say....if satisfied why change .

Find using waxoil after sitting the tin in a bucket of warm water then pouring it in one of those small plant spraying bottles help's to get into the niggly areas.

Waxoil is s product of the past, times have moved on as previously mentioned.

Have a look on "Frosts"(.co.uk) website as they do some more update and much more efficient stuff.

Thanks people some very good advice from different points of view,
I think I will have a look into more modern rustproofing do some research on it see if it changes my mind, however I've only used waxoyl a few times on the likes of 90's cavaliers etc but as the omega isn't that bad but just would like something done about it now before it might get any worse

As I live only a couple of mile from salt water & winters can be hard enough on my cars so was thinking to get it done now as the weather is getting better

A product called Dinitrol grade 3125HS I've found superb over the years
One great advantage is it comes in 500ml aerosol & can be applied directly to rust& dust
Also it says it won't damage rubber seals etc
It appears to boil/foam it's way on
It says on the tin:-
 High Solids corrosion prevention for cavities and open surfaces.
Brown,water displaceing, dry, waxy film
Its also available in canister form for use with a compressor & shutz type gun

The last 500Ml Aerosol I bought cost £15.25
Not cheap I know
The canisters  I think are cheaper
However very handy to have when I go under Miggy doing other stuff
Another tip I've found to be good is near me is a garage with a drive thro car wash which has a underneath wash option

Sounds like a good option and handy to use/apply, I will give them a call.  I also have access to a two post ramp in my work so that would be handy for me to get the job done right, is it messy to work with likes of taping bodypanels over to avoid any overspray etc
