oil filters, crosland mann guttmann purflux etc
« on: 01 May 2015, 23:25:07 »

any oof preference for oil filters apart from the predictable vx (who makes vx ones anyway?).  i've used a guttman for the last two oil changes they look ok (made in india with a german sounding name) but the vx kept the oil looking cleaner for longer.  crosland currently £1.64 at eurosales or £3.24 for the paper insert

<edit> just discovered euros car parts bought the name crosland and stick on the cheapest filters they can get >:(

Mann filter and first line seemed to go hand in hand a few years ago when a mate had access to first line parts through a personal contact. It didn't last, as we had nothing but agro with first line parts, and the only time we had filters that didn't fit where Mann filter items. Usually incomplete threads on spin on oil filters. Correct part, just badly made. Meaning in emergency trip to Halfords having already removed the old filter with a hammer and screw driver usually.

Spin on ones cost less than a Mcdonalds Happy Meal, cartridge ones aren't much more :y

i'm guessing that the 'genuine' vx filters are actually made by someone else.  main prob in buying vx though is it means a trip to a dealer or joining tc or probably both.  via ecp its just a few clicks no need to enter credit card even and it's delivered to my door.

this site is interesting: Oil Filters Revealed http://www.minimopar.net/oilfilters/index.html

I've used all three at one time or another.

Little or no difference in my opinion.

i now have in my hand a genuine vauxhall vof93 spin on filter and the guttman equivalent (the mann haven't arrived yet).  they look identical especially the inside - same hole pattern, same crimp join, same surplus sealant at the bottom 1/3 of circumference, in the same position in relation to the join.

however the gm one weighs  259g and the guttmann 263g,   outer diameter gm 77.6mm guttmann 77.7mm.  6 hole diameter gm 6.8mm, guttmann 6.9mm.  such small deviations that they could still be made on the same production line.

euro car parts seem asleep on my order so the mann ones haven't arrived yet.

As always with "who makes OE", remember that what the OEM makes for GM won't, in virtually all cases, be the same as what they sell into the aftermarket channel.

So, many GM oil filters are made by Mahle, often stamped Mahle, but these are noticeably different to the Mahle ones from a factors. Not saying which is better, but they are different.

In the case of air filters, GM every single time. They have a far larger surface area than the factor tosh.

As to convenience, at the risk of going blue in the face, get a friggin' TC card. Cheap, quality, effortless.

Even without TC, genuine service parts are hardly expensive...

without tc the vaux branded filters (at £4.50, after shopping around) are about double the mann ones (and mann is a pretty respected make) and nearly 3 times a 'crossland' one.  tc is £25 a year is that right?  how much discount would i get? do all dealers honour tc now? :-\

in a factory mass producing filters it is possible I suppose that they deliberately downgrade the 'vaux' badged ones  :-\

if i didn't care about the price of things i prob wouldn't have an omega in 2015 (though would have in 1998) :)
