Feel a bit smug...
« on: 04 May 2015, 10:44:38 »

I have come to the conclusion that old cars (even old Vauxhalls) are better than new cars...

I tell you why....

My B-in-L has a Volvo (54 plate , 95K miles) and it now needs a new engine as it let go of its aux belt whilst on the motorway and the belt basically ripped through the cambelt and trashed the engine for him... his wife (my wifes sister) had a little clit, someone ran into the back of it and wrote it off.... they are now car less, he works in Carnforth as he has his own shop there and the S-in-L works in Skem.... they both live in Wigan...

My F-in-L has a big Peugeot (56 plate, 60K miles) theres something wrong with it, he doesn't know what it is but has gone to trade it in for another car today...

The in laws was supposed to be taking their caravan up to Carnforth for the B-in-L to basically live in whilst the Volvo gets repaired...

The F-in-L was supposed to be dragging the caravan up to Carnforth for them, he's not doing that now - I'm doing it instead...

So the conclusion is, my Omega which has done not quite 150,000 miles, cost me £500 to buy, has a full 12 months MoT (which passed with no advisories) is taxed for 12 months, was basically laughed at by the family for buying is now the ONLY car that can get them all out the ****....

I feel a bit smug too. ;)

All that money us omega owners save. As posted elsewhere, friends just paid somewhere in the order of 75k for an almost new diesel car each.

Don't want to tempt fate though, it's still on its original crank sensor.  :-X

I wouldn't mind but the Volvo had almost £1600 spent on it last MoT just so it would pass...

He asked me what I would do.... I said scrap it LOL

He's told me it will cost £1000 to 'see' if they can repair the engine.... doesn't see the sense in buying another car whilst the Volvo gets repaired...

And they've probably never actually heard an engine explode.

It always leaves my friends confused as to why the roads feel smoother when they're given a lift in my car. Every car now is just so fidgety and 'tight' to the point of back-breaking. Because that's 'sporty'... I call it a backward step.

I adore my old girl, she's riddled with little faults here and there, but they're all getting sorted bit by bit; and the main bits - the going and the stopping, the getting there in comfort, she does beautifully with zero fuss or effort.  :)

In fairness, I have had an Aux belt fail causing bits of it to enter the Cam Belt housing and result in death of a perfectly good engine (X30XE).  :-\

I very much miss the Omega's I've owned (all Elite's) for the sheer ride comfort, but the Saab 9-5 I have now (Aero) is no different in terms of comfort to the F/L Omega's.  IMO the PFL and MFL have a much better 'cruising' ride due to their tyre profiles.

I'd have another Omega in a heartbeat, but I'd miss the power of the Saab.
