Water!?!  :o lol!

Presumably your ecu has adjusted itself to the cheap fuel and retarded its ignition to suit the appropriate octane level? Perhaps the sudden shock of a fresh tank of higher-octane v-power was just enough to trip it up!?!  :-/

Shouldn't have done it any long term harm though should it?

There shouldn't be any "learning" issues involved in the initial start. The ecu will use a fixed ignition timing and injector duration based probably just on temperature to get the engine firing.

My guess is that the petrol was not of the best quality. Fuel from a tank that doesn't see much turnover and which suddenly gets a hammering due to a shortage...  :-/

My kit car needs super unleaded or it pinks so it's a good indicator of fuel quality. However, I have found that if you buy super from garages that don't shift much of it, you may as well just chuck fresher 95 RON in it and save yourself some cash.  >:(
