When I was at school the first day of summer was around the 21st June. Who says that today is the first day? Has it been creeping forward each year or something?

The 21st is the longest day and then the nights start drawing in! Gulp.

Today is the first day of summer in the meteorological calendar. The year is conveniently divided into four, three month periods.

21st June is the longest day, but how can that be the first day of summer if it's all down hill from there?

Isn't there reports June is going to be hot? Like hottest on record? Heard something at work anyway.

Better get a shift on if so, as on average across the month at this rate the rest of month will need to be hotter by the minute! :o

It's gonna get hot(ter) in the centre of the universe (London) later this week, but not for long.
Pisses me off when the weather people get all excited about '25 degrees later this week' and show you a map of the UK with 25 stuck over London and 15 everywhere else.
Hope they choke on it.  ;D

21st June is the longest day, but how can that be the first day of summer if it's all down hill from there? Who said it was going to be downhill? The sun is at its warmest from the 21st. The sea around Britain is warming up , so the land gets warmer hence it is summer.

Look on the bright side, just over 3 months and it will be Autumn. Day and night each 12 hours! ;D
