It was about £4 from a market stall.

Currently, my favourite tool is the bigger lathe I bought last year to replace a mini-lathe.

But the plasma cutter is a real time saver for big sheetmetal jobs combined with a decent MIG welder. There is also something particularly satisfying about doing a good aluminium weld, although I don't manage it very often.

Hammer and mole grips.

Agreed.

This implement should not be used on genitalia.

We are all picking clever/expensive tools. I think we are overlooking the really useful tools...
Hammer
WD40 (Or better)
Cable ties
Gaffer tape
Gloves

If you need more tools in your box, then buy multiples of the above list.  :y

Flexible magnet thingy, so useful for getting those dropped screws and bolts that you can't reach, not to mention fishing the grub screw I dropped down the timing chain case on my Senator  :-X

Have I stumbled onto Mumsnet? The only acceptable answer is "hammer". Unless its "big hammer".

You need to broaden your experience.
I'll see your "big hammer" and raise you a 12" petrol disc cutter.

A heavy duty CK flat bladed screwdriver with a hex area on the shaft so you can put some real leverage on those rusted screws that has taken in its stride many, many years of abuse and is none the worse for it. :) :) :) :) Abused for everything from a heavy duty lever to a small cold chisel. :o :o :o :o

When I was an apprentice if you won one of the annual Apprentice prizes, you got a voucher to spend at our local quality engineering tool shop. So the screwdriver didn't even cost me anything. :y :y :y :y
