RIP Charles Kennedy

Only 55, found at home dead, no suspicious circumstances.

Losing seat as MP was meant to have badly affected him.

One of the few of his kind who seemed to be driven by his own conviction instead of greed. Also seemed a genuinely nice bloke. The best die young, it seems.

He had a wife and a young son
He was also a friggin alcoholic who drunk himself into a early grave to leave his wife to bring up a young son without a father ...............

If he was getting treatment and on the wagon then fair enough but if he was still pouring whiskey down his neck the he is a selfish bastard, nothing else  >:(

.  Personally speaking I have never met a perfect human being, we all have faults or secrets that  even our nearest & dearest may know nothing about at 55 years of age he should be looking forward to an early retirement perhaps ,not lying in a box  being slagged off .

Agreed. Let he without sin, etc...

He took the extraordinary step for a public figure of being honest about seeking help for his problems with alcohol once they started to affect his public life. It's not as if drinking oneself to death is a "lifestyle choice" for most.

I don't recall his passing being linked to alcohol in the first place. ::)

I just remember the time when he took the Lib Dems to their then-highest level of power, largest proportion of votes, he then came out as having been an alcoholic, but was now off it, and getting better. Then gets booted out as leader of the Party. Such is Politics, sadly.

If you live for politics, if it is your passion, and you are trying to do good, just consider what losing your seat as an MP would do to you, mentally-speaking. All I've had in my head since hearing the news is that story of Churchill, where, upon losing the general election sat with his aid (butler/ aid/ valet/ personal assistant, I regret I forget the specific job title and the man) and he is said to have slumped to the ground, and said "and now the British people don't want me any more" and they both wept together. Such a sad tale and I for one can imagine a not-dissimilar scene at Charles Kennedy's house a few weeks ago.

For a politician he seemed like a thoroughly decent man and I've been a bit sad that many of the obits have focused on his demons.  :(

Very very sad for his family. RIP.   :'(

I assume not the latter as he was found by his new girlfriend.

I mean, presumably it wasn't old age that killed him.
