Gearbox fill
« on: 08 July 2015, 15:45:27 »

Right I thought i would check the gearbox fluid and like a numpty i jacked the car up and undid the plug only to get a wash with fluid, Quickly put plug back and tightened it. didnt loose to much. ::)

Came back in and checked the maintenance guide to find that i should of taken the car for a drive and so on. I took it out and about and got it nice and warm (car temp showning just above 80)then came home went through all the gears twice and while it was still running I jacked it up undid the plug and squirted a bit in and no sooner that i did this it spat it straight back out.

Am i doing something wrong or is it just full allready

As many oils age and get used they suffer from sheer......this has an interesting effect as it results in a volume increase.

Hence it would appear over full and may well explain what you have seen.

When you jacked it up, was it it only on one side?

I think the car should be level with engine running?

Jacked it up only on drivers side as per the guide.

How do I check if level is ok.

Had a look this morning under the car..Why I dont know.

Anyway noticed the level plug for the gearbox was weeping a bit of oil so i decided to change the copper washer as I had read i should have done it the first time round. So I went of to get some petrol and when i got home i jacked the car up and got ready to change the plug. I unscrewed the old one and guess what it started pouring out gearbox oil again :'( :'( :'(

I quickly changed the plug and washer over then let the car back down.

Question 1.. how high does the car need to be jacked up to stop the oil from coming out.
Question 2.. I ran the car through the gears once back on the floor and no clonking am i correct in saying that they still should be enough fluid in the box. I think i have lost about 1/2 a pint. I am just a bit weary now because Iam already on my second box.

Should be level with the engine running, having gone through the gears a couple of times. If the fluid has been in there a while it tends to break down and form long polymer chains which make it take up more volume.

You don't say if the engine was running ?? if it wasn't it will ALWAYS overflow.

Sorry yes engine was running and the fluid has still got a pinky colour to it so dont think its that old.

Run the fluid between your fingers... it should feel rough, almost gritty... if it's smooth, then it needs changing ;)

As for colour, fresh is about the same colour as cheap cherryade... gets darker with use... more red plonk/port than cherryade. The smell also changes from interesting through cats piss and onto week old skunk as it wears ;)

I'd be more concerned of there was NO fluid coming out tbh. I don't see anything amiss in your posts. I've never encountered any issues from a slightly over full fluid level as you describe as the car isn't precisely level. I'd bet mine is the same.

But obviously a low fluid level is bad, risking loss of drive.

To get the fluid absolutely correct, turn engine on. Cycle through all gears and select neutral, jack up, remove the plug bolt, lower the car so it is level on level ground and allow excess fluid to dribble out into a pre positioned container. Once the flow stops, or slows to tiny dribble (you'll be there a while so most people don't bother and wack the plug back in, it really is not that critical) Jack up, re fit the plug, turn engine off. While down the mess on the box.

Or, leave it be its fine :y

Unless it starts playing up I will be leaving well alone...

Just wanted to tick it off the list.

If it does play up, we know it's not due to low fluid level. Unless you see an unexpected external leak. :y

Going upto serek on monday to get pre-cat bosses done. Also finally sussed out the rattle from the back end is inside the box so he is going to cut it open and sort out whatever is rattling.

Gears still hesitate now and again and rev counter still jumping. So yes I will be begging that ecu off you as a tester
