Andy H

No as far as I'm aware its not been off road, as a matter of fact its not been anywhere really. Prior to me buying it this time last year it was off road stuck in a barn for the best part of 5 years and I've only used it occasionally over the last year (about 1000 miles).

Haha henryd  ;D ;D ;D Yup mine is the petrol gulping V8 soon to be LPG'd  :y

Thanks for the replies guys, this site is a lot better than the Discovery site I'm PAYING to be a member of. You can put post up there and they have cobwebs on them before they get read & replied to  :y :y :y

Gonna start with the starter relays in the am if it ain't too wet tomoz and take it from there.
It doesn't have to get muddy to have the problem - a light coating of rust due to not being used much could also cause the solenoid to struggle to fire the pinion into the ring gear.

Ignition switch on the back of the barrel wears out, had 2 go on me ( not on lamdies mind)and the symptoms baffled the AA , garages etc. I had position 1+2 with the dash lights coming on then break all when trying to start it, happened randomly. Switch is easy to change usually and about a tenner so worth bearing in mind if your going to start swapping stuff

I'd be starting at the ignition switch and working down the line :y

Should have a ground, constant and switched live... I reckon the delay is the (internal) contacts for the switched live being knackered. I think I had the same on my RR at one point :-\

Just to add... It should have a switched live (act position) and a live that switches with cranking to fire the relay for the starter, IIRC

Range Rover or Rolls Royce? Just checking how well business is going ;) ;D

(But yes, I'd start with the switch and work my way down to the starter .. start with the easy bits and work your way to the oily bits!)

The latter of course ::) ::)

Business is slow but steady... Considering expanding into the Reading area (I think it basically runs from A34 to M25, M3 to M40. But they have to do me a good deal  ;)

Have you done the electrical tests? Check it is actually switching? As above, it's a common failure

Took the switch out and replaced it with a known working one, plugged the other one in & tried to start it - same problem.   :-\ :-\ :-\

Find the cranking live and see if it switches immediately, then you can guarantee it is ok. Just to be certain
