Don't forget though that main stealers get huge bonus payouts from manufacturers for hitting monthly sales targets,so technically they can take a loss on a brand new car to hit said target[this varies month to month depending on whether manufacturer figures that historically any given month is a good or bad one sales wise]and thus gain many thousands in bonus payments.

I also seem to recall something about righting down the price of a px using some of the profit/bonus in the new car, but the last time I sold cars for a dealer was in 1976....... :D :D

A lot depends on the car, and the potential re-sale value. In 1990 I bought a new Mini Cooper, one of only 1000 to be made and sold. I remember the day I tool delivery being offered more money for it from another Rover dealer; they were rationed by Rover. Price held well, all the 'expert' advice was to hold on to the car, they Rover changed the goal posts and continued to sell the Mini Cooper for another 8 years, prices plummeted..... :D :D

Well my old M3 has popped up on Autotrader for sale by a dealer in Skipton; not the dealer I traded it in with in Derby (www.carbridge.co.uk) so I guess they sent it to auction.

It looks like it's had a refurb on the wheels and maybe some new tyres and it's up for £8795, I got £4000 trade in.

Let's see what the ad says, shall we?

BLUE, BMW M3 Individual Convertible SMG II finished in the most sought after metallic Estoril Blue, HUGE SPEC, 118k

OK so far and all true..

Quote
(mainly motorway) miles

Well that's balls, for a start.. I know the previous owners wife used it as a commuter but it had some hard miles with me including several track days, so unless Donny, Oulton and Rockingham have recently been reclassified as motorways..

FULL SERVICE HISTORY with 9 service stamps in the booklet (8 are BMW main dealer and 1 is an independent specialist)

Interesting because there are no stamps in my ownership and I bought it in 2012!

Quote
also loads of accompanying documentation and invoices, full DVLA print out to verify mileage,

That's true, I did give them a buttload of receipts.

19” unmarked M3 alloy wheels,

Yes but only because they've had a refurb - no longer diamond cut or two-tone, although that's fine, it means they won't go bad after the first winter!

Quote
optional extras on this car include Electric front seats with drivers memory, Air Conditioning (re-gassed July 2015), BMW first aid kit, tool kit and warning triangle, Interior and side mirror automatic dip, Smokers pack, XENON HEADLIGHTS, DVD Navigation System Professional with map update, grey heated leather sports seats, Hi-Fi system Harman Kardon, BMW 6 disc auto-changer, M sports suspension, Parking sensors (PDC), Rain sensor, headlight cleaning system, multi-function M steering wheel, Tracker,

All above board there.. although the nav didn't work for me, maybe they fixed that.

Quote
this car has been meticulously maintained regardless of cost;

I wouldn't go that far.. the new SMG pump was a new motor in old pump housing so that's not OE, although I did at least service it and refurbish the brakes.

Quote
recent maintenance work includes all filters replaced, Castrol Edge 10w60 Fully Synthetic oil, tyres and balancing, 4 wheel alignment, brakes overhauled.

OK..

Quote
Thousands spent to keep this car in exceptional condition.

Well..

Used only as a weekend car.

Apart from all those journeys to & from work, up & down the M40, round and round race tracks..

Dealers, eh? Bent as a nine bob note.
