Is the type of spin-on oil filter critical?

I'm about to do the spin-on oil filter conversion on the 3.2l LPG Saloon and then the 2.6l Estate, and have found two filters in the spares box in the garage. They must both be at least 5 years old.
They are both conventional diameter (78mm), but one is 118mm long with slightly smaller elliptical holes, (Coopers Z502) as opposed to 95mm long with conventional round holes on the other(Halfords HOF200). Although slightly different design the distances from the face of the threaded holes to the face of the rubber seals look identical. I can't recall which car the longer one was bought for, but possibly not VX.
The longer one presumably has a slightly greater volume, but is it critical which one I use?
Or should I stop being a skinflint and buy the current correct ones for a 3.0l and a 2.6l.  ::)

If they spin on and seal,use them.

I use VOF93 genuine picked up some for £1.49 each a few months back from Pentagon on ebay.  :y

Will look out for those then  :y I got a genuine oil filter from the stealers
last week for £4  :( I needed it though so had to pay full wack .

Beware that the threads can vary. Some are close enough to each other that they will appear to spin on, but the filter will get blown off by the oil pressure once it's heated up. This makes a mess and will lunch the engine if you don't shut it down immediately, of course.

Some vary in whether they have a relief valve or not. The Omega has one built into the engine, so it probably doesn't matter.

For the sake of a couple of quid, though...

Last lot cost me £1 + VAT each, but I did have to buy 10.
