These low mileage V6s budget for what?
« on: 29 July 2015, 23:21:47 »

There have been a few very low mileage Omegas for sale recently.

Quite tempting but what goes with age on the V6s.? (as opposed to mileage)

I am thinking oil cooler, wishbones. I class HBV, Cambelt as consumables

Anything else?  Wishbones /suspension could be a real problem as no WIM here.

Treat it as such and you'll be fine :y

Mileage is a tricky one.  I'd sooner have a 200k mile vehicle which has been serviced correctly, looked after and treated well then a 50k mile car which hasn't seen a spark plug box in it's life.

With cars of this age (you ain't buying a young pup), you have to be looking at the same things, regardless of the distance the vehicle has travelled.

The other thing I'll add - I'd rather own a higher mileage car knowing it's been sat at 80-90 on motorways all day long than a car which some dodgery old fart has used to nip to the post office once a week.

My estate had 63k on it when I bought (120 odd now) it and I still think doesn't run as well as my 177k saloon did

Tyres .Crank seals.Exhausts. Just those alone can add up to over
£5-600 as i just found out as well as what's been mentioned .
You can never take anything the seller says as true unless its backed up with  .. receipts for everything that the seller says has been done .

Now about this engine replacement  ;D

I'm not sure there's much on an Omega that's strictly an age related failure. Rubber parts such as bushes perhaps, but I'd bank on the wishbone bushes and rear doughnut bushes needing doing on any 2nd hand Omega and the rest don't seem to have started failing in a big way yet. The last of the Omegas don't appear to have got to the age where rust is a serious issue unless badly neglected, save for the odd bubble on the doors or crispy rear wheel arch, nor degradation of brake lines, rubber hoses and so on.

Tyres, exhausts, crank sensors, HBVs, etc. are consumables, so nothing out of the ordinary to worry about on a low mileage car.

I would look at how it's been serviced. If it hasn't been serviced at least annually, regardless of how low the mileage is, then you can expect problems with the oil cooler, breathers, cam cover gaskets and so on as these are more likely to deteriorate faster if fluid changes have been neglected, especially if the car's only been used to potter around.

Based on how my car drives at 180k, however, I would buy any future Omega based on tidiness of the bodywork, as mileage is really of practically no consequence to the V6 mechanicals, it seems.

As for oil cooler, its service dependent, keep up with the coolant change intervals and no problem, any car is only as good as its last owner

It depends I suppose, bought mine with 70 k and replaced cam covers + gaskets, HBV, rear springs, brake pads all corners, cleaned breather box, spark pligs, oil sump + strainer, cambelt + tensioners, gear gaitor, handbrake gaitor, tyres, glovebox handle, boot struts, etc.......if I put it all together it's a brand new one now

Admittedly my 2.6 was bought as a project and some of the work that has been done on it has been for piece of mind rather than required but, I'm convinced it (an 03 plate) wasn't put together as well as my 3.2 (a 52 plate).... also it's clearly had a tougher life in the past. The costs getting the 2.6 right are three times that of the 3.2 :(

So the question is... do I put a 3.2 in it in the future or do I knock on the chaps door up the road who has a black 3.2 on the drive that hasn't moved in two years and possibly put in an offer?  ::)

Not sure I want to go back to having three Omega's  ::)

If he wanted to sell at the right price I might have to park it up in a barn and leave it as a project for another year!

...or rather it's least diligent previous owner to date.
