MK6 Fiesta Glowplugs
« on: 09 August 2015, 17:43:37 »

Daughter # 2 has had a fault light appear several times over the last coupke of weeks so yesterday she took car to local garage to find out what problem was ,despite it giving no running issues.

Guy put it on machine and diagnosed glowplugs and said they could do with being replaced although it wouldnt have any great impact on the car if they werent other than light keep appearing.

She asked me today "is that a job you can do dad" but knowing next to nothing about glowplugs I would welcome any advise on whats involved/any special tools required and should I just leave it well alone and send her off to the garage for a quote.Parts look to be about £12=00 each from Europarts

Try looking on fud forums, guessing replacement is the reversal of removal :)

Make sure the car is warmed up when you do it. Breaking off a glow plug in the cylinder head would be one shit day indeed!

In terms of removal, usually they're really accessible but if they're not remove anything in your way to give you a clean shot with a socket and extension. . . You don't want to round one off either!

Use a thin walled (as sometimes the plugs are quite recessed in to the head) six point socket and a bit of penetrating oil. I usually use a bar also for leverage but if it feels 'wrong' when trying to loosen them it probably is and you may end up snapping one off, round it etc.

I've been really lucky though.

Best of luck!  :y

I did the ones on my old Skoda a while ago. They are all much of a muchness in type for removal & replacement.
I used penetrating fluid first, let them soak overnight, although looking at using it, it didn't help much as you need to break the seal for it to get into the threads.

Took the car for a run to get it to operating temperature, then as webby said get the correct socket to remove them.

Make sure you fit the socket square and not at an angle as the plugs can be quite brittle. When you start to undo them, take it very steady, if you feel the plug getting tight whilst undoing, tighten it up slightly, spray some penetrating fluid down it and then try undoing again. If you are careful and use the undo a little, then tighten slightly they will come out a lot easier, patience is definitely key. I had 6 to do & was sweating like a pig because if I broke one it would be cylinder head off job.

I only had 1 that was an awkward little ***** but theres always 1. Done em in the past and had no problems, but each engine is different. As I said patience is key.

Exactly what Jason said. . . Especially the angle in which you get your socket at. . . That's why I said remove anything that gets in the way so you have as straight a shot as possible  :y
