7 not 8 spits over Pompey Tuesday afternnoon
I like listening to the old stories from ppl who where there in the city at the time of WW2.

One of the German raids targeted the railway network of the city, hitting the harbour station etc. One Cosham resident at the time told me her Uncle (fireman) was runinng down Cosham high street as the raid grew in intensity. He was making for a point south of Cosham station. A bomb came hurtling down only yards from the station, clipped the front of the cinema but didn`t go off. It skipped-up off the road & flew over the railway gates & smashed thru the top of a 2 storey building & flew another quarter mile east before burying itself near some playing fields.

She pointed out the clearly visible repaired brickwork on the front of the building following the repair after the war.
My Mum tells the storey of a German raid on Thorney Island (coastal command airfield) The Landmines being dropped drifted north & one went off in Emsworth creek. She & her Mum & little brother were in the shelter & felt the explosion. When they came up followng the raid. the blast had knocked the front door in & travelled up the stairs & out thru the roof. The following morning the kids started finding shredded parts of the landmine parachute. The next day german fighter / bombers flew the length of the railway between chichester & Pompey shooting up the trains & stations, One A/c circled back around to target the gasometer in Emsworth. He missed & went around for a second time. The spits from tangmere clobbered him on his second pass. She recalls seeing the german aircraft smoking & flying south out to sea.
