Advice please....Code reader says E.G.R.valve at fault on a 2.2 omega.......so  do I replace it,,,,blank it off....or clean it........also any one know what correct engine temp should read when running at motorway speed and around town speed.. :-\    thanks.... :y.

I would clean it first as that is easy / cheap etc

Temp should be 85 / 90C at all times in my experience of the 2.2.

My 2.2 always sits at 85 temp wise, unless in hot traffic then it's 90  :y

Thanks for the info...try cleaning it first it is then.....my 2.2 from cold temp rises to around 88 then drops back to around 80 deg,,,then normal running runs anywhere between 85 deg if on motorway anywhere between 85 and 92 deg....which I am told is on the hot side...had it tested for head gasket today but nothing showed up,,so now having been told this i am a bit concerned,,,should i be  ???????....just to add....new radiator was fitted by previous owner 3 months ago along with new water pump and timing belt and tensioner ......although water pump began leaking last week so had that replaced today,,thanks :y

85-92 sounds about right. Fans come on at 90 to cool it down  :y

Cheers Tunnie once again for your help....I will clean e g r valve over the weekend and keep an eye on the temp gauge and see if i can build up some confidence in this motor that i have only recently bought,, :y

Temps sound ok to me - if you want to build confidence start from cold on parked on drive, aircon off and let it warm up. You can observe stat opening (feeling front hose) and then fans cutting in and out so you know it's all working.

Today started from scratch with the cooling issue....the previous owner last year had a replacement radiator fitted...today when i removed the radiator top covers i noticed that it is the wrong radiator been fitted,,,the radiator thats fitted has a gear box oil cooler fitted into the radiator tank itself and the connections were not connected to anything as my omega has the gearbox cooler fitted between the radiator and air con rad....and guess what was holding the oil cooler in between the two rads.....4...cable ties as there was no fixings on the rad to bolt it to....so i have now changed the radiator over to the correct one and bolted the cooler to it as it should have been done in the first place,,,god knows what model that rad was for....blinking cowboys....so while the coolant was drained I replaced the stat,,just for my  peace of mind...refilled system ran it up and bled it...took it for a run and the highest the temp went was 95 degrees and fans cut in and it fell back to around 92 deg,,,ok so it is still around the same temp but at least I have peace of mind that since yesterday i have had a new water pump fitted,,,plus a stat...plus system flushed,,,clean new antifreeze and the fans work when they should,,,so next on the list is cleaning the e g r valve,,,thanks for the help and will let you know the result of the e g r cleaning when i have done it.. :y

You will struggle to get a rad without the autocooler in now. It doesn't make any difference either to cooling.

Temp should be mid-point on the gauge (PFL and FL have different temps printed on the gauge). Cruising, it should be just under, in traffic it'll creep to just over.

If ECU on a 2.2 is complaining about EGR (likely EGR position/feedback circuit?), you'll need to attempt cleaning, else replace it I'm afraid. A known good 2nd hand one is fine.

Today.i removed the egr valve from my desmond because the light on the dash was illuminated and when the diagnostic equipment was plugged in it threw  up egr fault,so after removing the unit I found  although it had carbon deposits on it,the plunger/valve was closed and moved in and out very easily so not knowing anything about them am i right in thinking that it is ok then ????..if not can they be tested.......In the meantime i have fitted a cheater plate and the light is still on,,,will i have to have the light  put out with diagnostic or will it go out on its own as it has been doing lately...thanks  :-\

OK, obviously my first post wasn't clear.

The engine ECU couldn't give 2 hoots if the egr is leaking or blocked. It ONLY cares that the feedback circuit matches what the ECU thinks its position should be.

If you have a light on, its because the feedback circuit doesn't match.  If its that free moving, replace, as you won't be able to fix the innards.

As said, a known good 2nd hand one is fine. Up to you if you fit the blanking plate.

The rad I linked to in Kates thread has all the mounting points... You simppy swqp the hardware over ;)

That said, aren't the four pot Rads different :-\

the rad fitted to mine did not have mounting brackets to take the oil cooler that was situated between the air con and the main rad..hence it was cable tied to the main rad and thats why I changed it to the correct one that had a double fixing point at the top of the rad so you could not only bolt the air con rad to it but you could bolt the oil cooler as well as the plastic mounting brackets were double the size...job done. :y
