What would a reasonable cost be to fix leak in rear diff? Leaking around the area where the prop enters..

Is it the pinion seal?

Have heard of £5-600 for a full refurb, but would expect changing that one seal to be around £120 fitted, based on £85 for the gearbox rear seal

SMD I don't know what the seal is called.. Just know where its leaking from.. Don't know what else is in the vicinity that leaks. £120 doesn't seem a bad price I spose

Had the rear pinion seal fail on my old MFL 2.5 some years ago.

GM seal was about £30 from memory and god old Daz replaced it whilst doing the autobox.It wasnt a difficult job but did make things a whole lot easier with the car in the air.Trick was to replicate the original setting of the pinion nut to the mounting to ensure the original preload was maintained,as remember reading that a members diff was shreaded quite quickly when just the seal was done without much attention to the preload.

Mark DTM,s guide was followed when job done originally with slight difference of also counting the " flats " on the nut as a second safety and job took around 1 hour,but as said access was the key to making it simpler than it would of been on jacks and stands.

Diff never leaked again from pinion seal.

Have recently drained and resealed the diff plate on new FL 3.2 and that was quite straight forward too,but they really are the only 2 places I could see it leaking from

Not the job I'll be doing myself so it will be a garage job... Pity I don't have the knowledge or confidence to do it as I have access to a pit in the garage at work.

Would be quite straight forward with access to a pit and would save you an hour or so,s labour along with the knowledge it has been done properly and by your own hands.

You will just need to check the oil level after replacing the seal but probably will have lost only a minimal amount despite the mess the leaking seal makes under the car.

Also remember the new seal will require soaking in diff oil for a while before replacing to ensure the rubber is soft and supple to avoid it tearing .

Mine leaks as well.    and I'd bet that it's a common issue on high milers. 

Maybe we should have a pinion party!

For the small amount of oil that seems to leak it does make a mess ,but I suppose the plus side is being liberally coated in oil it does stop things rusting ,so maybe its VX inbuilt treatment system.

Just check the diff oil level and top up as required so cant see it being such a big issue really ,just got mine done as we were in a better position with ramp etc to make job simpler

Mine only has 55k on the clock..
