Friend Ali enquired zbout changing a clutch on a Vauxhall Signum. Said he had been quoted £1000, should he scrap the car? Is the Signum FWD? Is the clutch change a big job?

It is indeed. And when you put 250 BHP and the thick end of 300 ft lb of torque through the front wheels you know about it.

Subframe off job, so price, if fitted and including vat and parts isn't unreasonable... :y

its about 6h labour  , tracking ,and what ever clutch cost maybe £200+vat
6x35+vat labour
25+vat tracking
200+ vat parts maybe cheaper

not even near a grand but different places have different rates

I hear the same garage charges £30 P/H for cars that are not the colour of demonic projectile vomit. :)
