I've learnt a lesson from owning Omegas .....so unless you've got deep pockets and are prepared to have a contingency fund to fix those undeclared faults that might not become apparent until after you take ownership,as they may well just bite you in the backside financially when they are discovered. So yes a punt, but could be a money pit :-\

Phil (pscocoa) is your man, he owned one for donks.

I have had 6 years trouble free, 60,000 miles. Only servicing and tyres - not even changed brake pads - this will be needed this year. I have the 3 litre diesel and despite car weight and permanent 4wd it is very quick and returns 37mpg on a run.

However - if something does go wrong it will not be cheap - for example if  change pads and discs all round this year - VW price will be £1200. If I go indie - probably still £600 ish.

Divide that by 6 years and maybe not too bad.

The drive is fantastic.

If the OP can find an indie that can work on these then worth a punt. However, the suspension on the 2003 is the old air strut system for which parts are not available - he should quiz seller carefully as to any fault codes showing and whether suspension is ok.

Cluck me. 600 bucks for discs and pads  :o

Must be mostly labor... Just looked on ECP the discs are not much more expensive than Omega ones if you DIY...  :-\

How can they be that difficult? Those prices are very reasonable.

Guess Phateon forums won't have as many DIY threads :(

Human nature would say to me..."if he's selling it for a grand, and they're usually worth a lot more....why?"

I already asked myself that question. But it's worth a look at least because he is 10 minutes away.

If there are no replacement suspension parts available (not even pattern?) what happens when its needs replacing? Scrap the car?  :o
Sell it to a mate for £1000  ;D

Seriously though "what man has made, man can make again" . If the cars are desirable enough someone somewhere is going to be refurbishing or remanufacturing the necessary parts :y

I have gone off the idea of this phaeton. The 3.2 petrol isn't really powerful enough for my liking. In 2 wheel mode its wrong wheel drive.  The 0-60 for the FWD is 9s and the 4WD is 10s. In other words, its slower than webby 2.5 Omega!  :-X

If I was to consider one in the future it would the the V8/V10 I think

What's wrong with your 3.2? they are not a bad old bus and can certainly get you down the road as quick as you like. Also you have the vast array of technical info and experience of others at your finger tips on here. And on a personal basis I'm a bit reluctant to step outside of my comfort zone by buying an unknown quantity, and at over £100 an hour labour charges at local independent garages in this area I won't be selling my Omegas for a very long time...mind you,my 67th birthday is imminent so that could be sooner than I think ::) :)
