Local online Police news, saw these two entries

A van driver hogging the middle lane of the M62, J18-J21, forcing traffic into lane three to pass him, was issued with a Traffic Offence Report (TOR).

An Audi TT was also spotted hogging the middle lane of the M62 J19-21 in the roadworks, causing mayhem for HGVs

I am very glad to see this. it is the main thing that annoys me on the motorway

The list of things that annoy me about motorway driving is endless. Did Teesside-Gloucester yesterday, I swear the total IQ of the other drivers was about that of a herd of sheep.

Guy tailgating me the other day, in the middle lane. I was in the middle lane because I was overtaking (at 70mph) one vehicle, and 20 years further ahead there was another vehicle. No Idea what he thought I was supposed to do, presumably pull in between the two, brake from 70 to 55, let him pass, then pull out again. And yes, lane 3 was completely empty as far as the eye could see. He just decided he wanted to be there 

And the times I had to brake because of a middle lane hogger, and unable to pull out because of the string of cars (all german made saloons, I noticed) in lane 3. No idea now motorways manage to be statistically the safest roads.

Only had a 2 hour run up the motorway to Ikea! couldn't believe the driving!

Motorway driving

Lane 1: Normal traffic, HGVs, very scared-looking clearly-recently-passed-their-test drivers leaning forward permanently. Modded Saxos with 1 litre engines.
Lane 2: Middle lane hoggers, Hyundais doing 59mph and Latvian registered HGVs doing 0.5mph faster than the HGV they are parallel to. Modded Saxos overtaking their mate. Just.
Lane 3. Audis, BMWs, Mercs at a steady 76.9 mph (aware cameras kick in at the limit+10%) Transit vans doing 90mph. Saxo VTRs doing 90mph trying to get to Boots before the STD clinic shuts at 6pm.

The problem with this particular law is.....there has to be a police presence at the time of the offence,and in all honesty if the police were to have a purge on these middle lane retards  for half a day,they would be continually tied up with issuing tickets and bollockings and would be overwhelmed by the number of offenders, as there are literally thousands of drivers who think that it's OK to take the piss out of the rest of us and flout most of the existing traffic laws, let alone any new ones that pop up from time to time. I come home every day with a aching right arm (not from pleasuring  myself ) but from letting other drivers know that they are thick, selfish ,arrogant and brain dead tossers!!

I think that part of the problem on motorways is that in their early days people got the idea-and many still do believe it-that there is a slow lane a middle lane and a fast lane,where of course there is no such thing and never has been.I've lost count of the number of times I've come out of the empty near side lane into middle lane the off side lane and back again just to get passed some stupid middle lane hogger.I absolutely refuse to undertake these idiots as apart from the legality question you never know when they may decide that maybe  a change of scenery in the nearside lane might be quite nice after all.

Yep, exactly my notion. In theory, the outside lane should be always empty, the middle lane occasionally, and of course lane 1 with all normal traffic. But as you say, the perception is slow, medium and fast lanes. Only adds credence to my thoughts that everyone should have to take a refresher course once every ten years. Any time in your tenth year of driving, simply go into any local test centre, and take an hour's drive around. I did a speed awareness course not too long ago, and it was actually nice to re-learn a few things, and sharpen up a couple of bits which in my mind were a 'grey' area. Plus new laws and signage etc come in. Urban Clearways weren't in existence on the Theory Test not too long ago, and of course the Theory in itself is pretty recent, relatively. Not something where if you fail the lesson you get your licence stripped, that would be inflexible; but you have to go back the next week, retry etc.

Would be nice to see a few people sharpen up their parking, too!

Having said that some years ago the local branch of IAM were offering to go on a short test drive to give pointers/get you to sign up for full course.I was less than impressed when as I was in the outer lane of a dual carriageway overtaking some learner motorcyclists my "instructor" sent the passenger window down and started hurling abuse/making rude gestures at them for no reason that I could see Wouldn't have been so bad but if they came looking later we were in my car at the time Also he couldn't tell me how you're supposed to drive an automatic through flood water[I know how to in a manual but I've never seen it written or been told how to in an auto]Didn't take them up on the course though

I know it's Clarkson, which in itself engenders an immediate expectation of bull for some people... but I do remember an interesting article where he said in his opinion that 'professional' drivers are often the worst. He went an a simialr course, and at the point where he was told to overtake a vehicle properly, you're supposed to pull out onto the wrong side of the road then change down a gear, then accellerate, he promptly decided the guy teaching had no idea what he was talking about.

Of course, when you're behind an Astravan doing 49 in a 60, you start to overtake, whereupon he then accelerates up to 60  that get's a bit ... annoying

Which is where a 3.2 comes in... manual or auto, manually drop it to second or third* as you pull out and bury the loud pedal, sit back and enjoy

Once you've finished playing passed the offending obstruction, lift off and pop it back into 5th/D and chillax to the echoes of that v6atfullchatness...

*depending on which side of 45 mph you're at when you start... second sees you at the redline/70ish quite quickly if you're much over 40 and third will see you well on your way to a year long bus pass
