Didn't actually realise this but according to the article Tesla has yet to return a profit 

Looks like he needs either the volumes or lower volumes but super-high price of a hypercar, like a Veyron (another car which makes a loss, as it goes  )

Apparently, every vehicle sold, the production side, the sales side, and the aftermarket side, all make a profit, but all such profits are ploughed back into R&D so the company actually runs at a deliberate loss !!! although it did post profits for the first time in 2013. It was also the first car-company EVER to fully repay a US Government loan under the Advanced Technology Vehicle program .. and it did so on time .. unlike Ford/GM etc etc

Obviously the main focus is on Tesla, but it gives real insight into how/why the companies producing electric(ish) vehicles have made the choices that they have

Wow, that's impressive, brave, and actually rather moral, when you think about it

They will really go mass market once the range is over 200 miles on a single charge (they are on the cusp of this), fast charge batteries arrive (in development) and battery prices come down (new Musk battery factory is designed to achieve this with economies of scale). I reckon we are about 5 years away for a significant percentage of new car sales being milk floats. One big advantage of electric cars is that the air pollution is moved from high density population areas to lower power station ones, unless nuclear or renewables generated.
