Presumably pressure tested ok and non repaired ie no repairs needed with as much tread as possible is about as much as can be hoped for :-\

Is a half worn premium tyre a better bet than a no name black and round new tyre?
Not knowing history is a problem. Non visible sidewall damage due to being run under inflated? Damage due to I sense shock?

I'm not saying don't? But a tyre isn't simply black and round and legal tread.

Part worns are *NEVER* cost effective compared to new

As I've said in previous threads, if you buy a used car, you are buying used tyres, and I don't see people rushing out to put new ones on.

I believe there is more risk with a part worn, not that a used car is risk free obviously.

Why was a 2/3rds worn tyre with 5mm left removed?

Additionally, as I've said in previous threads (forgetting niche applications), it never works out cheaper in the long term

Which shit sandwich do you choose?

If I were looking purely for value for money, I would go with Autonogrips... if only because they are almost impossible to wear out, so cost per mile would be almost zero.

The winter question is a secondary one, being considered for three reasons... 1. I have 5am starts, which means leaving the house at 3.30, which is potentially before the gritters. 2. Even with last winters lack of winter, the winter tyres on the E Class made a noticeable difference compared to the budget tyres I had fitted to it. 3. Part worn winter tyres strike me as being a bit more useful than part worn normal tyres.

Makes sense... Also worth noting that some people will spend a small fortune getting a car through an MoT: new brakes, new tyres, new exhaust etc... only to scrap it a month or so later because the aircon stops working ???

Our local guy gets all his tyres from germany he said over there it 3mm legal limit so plenty of tread left for over here.

At one time I was able to get demounts for about 60% of new price, where a summer produced car was being exported to a winter tyre county for a winter fulfilled customer order. This seemed to me a good compromise on price v risk. :y :y :y

There was a fella used to offer 'new' contis on eBay. They were about half price.  I went up to North Yorkshire to get four and he told me he had the contract to replace any flat tyres on cars that had come off the ships and were parked at the docks. Most had just taken a knock whilst unloading and come off the rim or picked up a puncture while being driven off.
