Change to the lottery?
« on: 07 October 2015, 11:33:34 »

In future your six numbers will be taken from 59 balls instead of 49.

Do I have this correct?

So less chance of winning a prize but 1 in 10 chance of a free go.

Which is how they can claim improved odds of winning.

So this gives you another 45,000,000 to one chance of winning.

I'm glad they're changing it. I have been doing it since it's inception, first off two lines Wednesday and Saturday costing £4, then just two lines on Saturday when they doubled the price. My numbers are imprinted on my brain and the thought of stopping and my numbers finally coming up........well.
Now I know the chances of them coming up have increased from 1 in 14million to 1 in 45million, they can shove it. Circa £20 a month better off.

They also increased the odds when the cost of a ticket went up to £2, as before that you would have had two chances of winning for your money.

Very true, but that seems to have slipped people's minds :)

I think these new regulations will mean fewer people willing to pay and play each week.

Exactly, when you take into account £2 thing the odds of winning anything are highly increased compared to when it was a £1. (Pound for Pound).

Odds of winning compared to the old £1 Stake.

                       £1(49).               £2(49).               £2(59)
Match 3.          1:60.                  1:120.                 1:200
Match 4.          1:1000.              1:2000.               1:4400
Match 5.          1:55,000.            1:110,000.          1:290,000
Match 5+1.      1:2,300,000.       1:4,600,000.       1:15,000,000
Match 6.          1:14,000,000.     1:28,000,000.      1:90,000,000

So, pound for pound stake money, under the new £2, 59 Ball system you've got less chance of hitting Match 5 plus Bonus Ball than you had of winning the Jackpot under the old £1, 49 Ball System.

I am not sure what the prizes are as I do not do the lottery, but I remember one of the money wizards (like Martin Lewis) stating that the match 3 balls odds were 57-1.
As he said, if you put a pound on a horse in the Grand National, and it won at 57-1, would you be happy to walk into the bookies, and him hand you £10. I think not.
But the Lottery works on the  'if' syndrome.....common sense loses out to the 'if I win the lottery'. The thought of masses of money falling into people's hands, clouds their judgement :(

Poverty tax.  ;)

It's not unusual to go into a newsagent in a 'deprived/rough' area and see people buying 40 fags and £20 worth of lottery tickets/scratch cards.  :-X  ::)
