Evening gays, I mean guys.

So, had a car in yesterday (punto perhaps  ). anyways it needed a centre silencer and that meant removing two very rusty nuts from the flange to the cat. anyway, it was the apprentices job and he stripped one. he went over to the head mechanic for advice, I overheard and thought... ''hmmm I can try something ive wanted to for ages''

so got the air chisel out and did what I saw in the below video (skip to 6 mins 50 secs)

worked like a freaking dream. and I was the hero. for once. I like that 

soif anyones got a air chisel, compressed air and some rusty exhaust fasteners, give this a go

Air chisels are also good for getting rotten front ends off Minis in record time...

Good for a garage and home DIY if you already have an air chisel. But guess they are not cheap to invest in one? As job that needs doing every 5 years or so, might need to do a few to get return on money.

I keep toying with idea of an air compressor for the garage for impact wrench stuff, but that and this I think means big bucks on something that's powerful

Yeah the expense is obviously the compressor. The chisel itself is pretty cheap. A sealey jobbie

You don't need to spend mega money for a decent home compressor (unless you want to spray) - 3hp twin cylinder 50L job will do you just fine, IMHO. Even a single cylinder if you don't mind waiting longer for it to charge.

[edit] And if you're going to buy budget Sealey/Draper tools you may as well buy Aldi/Lidl, they come out of the same factory (well, they look identical to me, inside and out!).  For an impact wrench find something decent, though, like Ingersoll-Rand or Bluepoint.

No its not,the impact wrench is for removing wheel nuts etc,the air chisel more for cutting off body panels

Probably my interpretation of Aaron's post. As we were talking chisels, then impact wrenches reared their ugly head. So thought must be one and the same.

Impact wrench, so called as the air rotates a weight, which then smacks seven bells out of the tool end, rotating it. Like the ones you hit with a hammer.

That will do most basic spraying, if your doing larger areas lob an old gas cylinder on and wait until it fills that with air to increase the reservoir capacity.

my impact gun is Makita 18v cordless. im not blowing my own trumpet but its better than anything anyone uses at the garage, air or electric/cordless.

as for the air chisel the sealey ones are as cheap as the aldi/lidl ones...

so has anyone else got any interesting exhaust nut/bolt removals like the one ive used? would be interested as I bet ill come up against some in the future where perhaps I cant get the chisel in or ANother problem

I did consider buying that too as I have the batteries already but I like different stuff and I plumped for a de Walt impact driver for engine bay work

. . . Which was a mistake by the way. The lock ring that secures sockets on is, well, shite and I struggle to get sockets on even after 3 months.
